Small octavo (152 × 956mm). Contemporary tan quarter calf, spine gilt
ruled, red morocco label, marbled sides, red speckled edges. Cataloguing
entry laid down to front pastedown. Boards rubbed and lightly marked,
hinges cracked, a few light spots to contents, bottom of final leaf present
torn and repaired at foot without affecting text.
「 自 殺 について」、「 魂 の 不 死 性 について」の 二 つの 小 論 を 併 録 した 稀 覯 本 です。
この2つの 論 文 は、ヒューム= 無 神 論 者 という 批 判 の 大 きな 論 拠 となりました。
1755 年 にヒュームは 既 に 書 き 上 げ Five Dissertationsとして 出 版 されるはずでした
が、 読 者 から 否 定 的 な 反 応 が 見 られた 為 、 出 版 社 (Andrew Millar)がこの2つの
論 文 を 外 し、 小 論 “On the Standard of Taste”を 加 えてFour Dissertationsとして 出 版
したことは 有 名 です。 匿 名 の 著 者 として1770 年 にフランスで1777 年 にイギリス
で 海 賊 版 が 出 版 されました。その 後 、ヒュームの 許 可 はなかったものの 始 めて
ヒュームの 名 を 冠 した 版 が 本 書 です。
