ステュアートの 唯 一 の 著 作 集 は、 一 人 子 の 同 名 の 将 軍 Sir James Steuart Denham, the younger
(1744―1839)の 編 集 によって 刊 行 されました。 彼 は、 生 後 間 もなく 父 ステュアートが1745 年
のジャコバイトの 反 乱 に 加 担 して、 亡 命 したため、ドイツで 教 育 を 受 け、ハイランド 軍 に 入 りまし
た。1780 年 父 親 の 死 後 、 領 地 と 爵 位 を 継 承 して1781~1801 年 にはラナーク 出 身 の 国 会 議 員 、
1803 年 には 将 軍 になりました。この 著 作 集 の 第 1~4 巻 を 占 めるのが『 経 済 学 原 理 』で、これが
この『 原 理 』の 正 統 の 第 2 版 で 決 定 版 となっています。 第 5 巻 には、『ベンガル 貨 幣 論 』などの 経
済 的 著 作 、 第 6 巻 には 貴 重 なステュアートの『 小 伝 』が 含 まれており、 原 本 はいずれも 稀 覯 書 ばか
りで 本 著 作 集 以 外 には 入 手 が 殆 ど 不 可 能 なものばかりです。
