First edition of the radical, educationalist, and prolific author James Burgh’s
(1714—1775) essays on parliamentary reform and education. These subjects
reflect Burgh’s lifelong interests; he was the master of the academy at Stoke
Newington and as a firm supporter of government reform became friends
with Richard Price, Benjamin Franklin, and other prominent radicals.
バラはセントアンドリューズ 大 学 出 身 でスコットランド 啓 蒙 思 想 家 との 実 質 的
関 係 はないといわれますが、 多 くの 政 治 パンフレットを 書 き、キャサリン・マコー
リのサロンでは 主 役 となり、エディンバラにいたラッシュにも 影 響 を 与 えたといわ
れます。のちに『 政 治 究 明 』を 書 きますが、 本 書 においてはラディカルな 議 会 改 革
論 、 教 育 論 を 展 開 しています。 第 二 巻 においては、120 頁 にも 及 ぶ「20 世 紀 の 善 良
な 英 国 人 に 捧 ぐ」と 題 する 論 文 を 書 いています。

ていた。スコットランド 啓 蒙 思 想 との 直 接 の 関 係 はないが、トマス・ペインは『コ
モン・センス』で 広 範 で 平 等 な 代 議 制 を 推 奨 、この 制 度 の 重 要 性 を 理 解 するために
バラの『 政 治 論 集 』を 読 むように 注 記 している。ベンジャミン・ラッシュもイギリ
