text. Yet the frames function in such a way that they are more like visual translations of
the text than illustrations of it. The drawings are almos-t verbal. The last frame is like a
paragraph, with all the background figures being sentences qualifying the (visual) text [fig
12].
Detailed drawing, with fine hatching, is often superimposed on flat decorative
backgrounds, and these are the most arresting frames. These decorative frames take over
the role that writing plays on the first page, where several typefaces are used to
demonstrate the progression of the plot, such as it is.
