W IRtsCHAft trimet baut Automotive-Bereich aus und erschließt neue Geschäftsfelder Mit einem Umsatz von 1,2 Milliarden Euro (Vorjahr: 1,3 Mrd. €) hat die Trimet Aluminium SE das Geschäftsjahr 2012/2013 zur Jahresmitte abgeschlossen. Mit einem Jahresüberschuss von 1,7 Millionen Euro kehrte das mittelständische Unternehmen in die Gewinnzone zurück. Trotz des leichten Umsatzrückgangs verzeichnete der Werkstoffspezialist eine gute Auftragslage, insbesondere im Automotive-Bereich. Trimet produzierte mit 1.924 Mitarbeitern an seinen Standorten nahe der Kapazitätsgrenze von 500.000 Tonnen Aluminium: rund 300.000 Tonnen Primärmetall und rund 200.000 Tonnen Recyclingmaterial (Primärschrotte und Bearbeitungsspäne). Im laufenden Geschäftsjahr 2013/14 soll das Automotive-Geschäft weiter ausgebaut werden. Die Übernahme zweier Produktionswerke für Aluminiumdraht in Frankreich steht laut dem Vorstandsvorsitzenden Martin Iffert kurz bevor und wird damit neue Geschäftsfelder erschließen. Mit einer Eigenkapitalquote von 40,2 Prozent verfügt das nicht börsennotierte Unternehmen über eine solide Handlungsbasis. ➝ trimet extends its automotive sector and develops new business fields With a turnover of 1.2 billion euros (previous year: €1.3 bn) Trimet Aluminium SE concluded its business year 2012/13 in mid-year. With a net income of 1.7 million euros the company has returned to profitability. Despite the slight turnover decline the company reported a good order position, particularly in the automotive sector. Trimet, which employs 1,924 people at its various locations, produced amounts close to its capacity limit of 500,000 tonnes of aluminium: around 300,000 tonnes of primary metal and 200,000 tonnes of recycled material (primary scrap and machining swarf). In the current financial year 2013/14 the automotive business is to be extended further. According to chief executive Martin Iffert, the takeover of two production plants for aluminium wire rod in France is imminent and this will open up new business fields. With an equity ratio of 40.2% the company, which is not quoted on the Stock Exchange, has a solid trading basis. The slight turnover decline compared with last year can be attributed to the recently low international prices of aluminium. In addition, owing to the renewal of electrolysis pots the full production capacity was not available. Over the past year Trimet noted unabated demand from the transport, building and packaging industries, for special aluminium alloys and semis. “Our order-books are full and there is no sign of an end to that trend,” said Mr Iffert. The worldwide demand for aluminium is expected to double between 2010 and 2020. To be able to meet the persistently high demand for casting alloys, Trimet has almost doubled its capacities in that sector with a new ingot casting plant. In all, the company invested nearly 40 million euros during the last financial year for the extension and modernisation of its production facilities. An important growth market is vehicle construction. eCoNoMy structural and chassis components and pressure-diecast housings. Despite rather lower automobile passenger-car sales the rising demand for structural components made of aluminium is a force for growth. “Our own metal basis, our know-how about materials and our orientation toward complex castings with a greater processing depth has proved a lasting strategy, for our customers as well,” said Mr Iffert. At its location in Harzgerode Trimet has considerably extended Germany’s most up-to-date gravity-diecasting foundry for chassis components. The production of a transmission and clutch housing for a noted automobile manufacturer, alone, will keep four large pressure diecasting machines busy until beyond 2020. W E C O N V E Y Q U A L I T Y Defined Cooling of Hot Bath Material takeover of french plants imminent With the takeover of two production plants in Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne and Castelsarrasin for high-grade wire rod and the electrolysis material required for them, Trimet is enlarging its portfolio to include a product with great market potential. In this connection Mr Iffert points to the necessary extension of the power grid in Germany, for which aluminium wire will be needed. Moreover, the automobile industry too needs aluminium wire, for example for connection elements. In that context aluminium is competing as a material against copper. Taken together, the two plants in France employ about 500 people. For the Primary Aluminium Smelting Process … und Gießerei in Essen … and casthouse in Essen Until now the market for wire rod was served by Trimet’s trading activities. However, customers increasingly call for tailor-made solutions. “So the two facilities fit in admirably with Trimet’s strategic orientation. That is true of both the products and the high technological level of their aluminium electrolysis.” The plants were originally built by the French group Pechiney, at that time a technology leader in the production of aluminium. Today they belong to Rio Tinto Alcan (RTA), which for strategic reasons wants to withdraw from that area of business. In 2012 RTA produced around 93,000 tonnes of smelted aluminium in Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne and 8,000 tonnes of wire rod in Castelsarrasin. However, the total capacity is larger: Trimet mentions a figure of 150,000 tonnes. Mr Iffert did not say anything specific about the purchase price, other than to say that: “The takeover conditions allow us to plan our investments dependably and in the long term.” In July Trimet made a binding offer for the takeover of the RTA plants, and the negotiations seem far advanced: “We expect to be taking over both plants ALUMINIUM · 11/2013 AUMUND Foerdertechnik GmbH
