to the schedules – in the presence of representatives<br />

of the Jiangsu province government.<br />

This good first impression was confirmed over<br />

the next years of the highly productive machinery<br />

operation.<br />

The market success with first-class 6 µm<br />

aluminium foil and the great satisfaction with<br />

the Achenbach machinery induced KunShan<br />

<strong>Alu</strong>minium last year to extend their capacity<br />

by purchasing another foil rolling mill and a<br />

separator. Both, rolling mill and separator,<br />

have been <strong>de</strong>livered, commissioned and accepted<br />

right on time.<br />

Apart from the chance to use the synergy<br />

effects of a comprehensive process optimisation,<br />

there were several technical <strong>de</strong>tail solutions<br />

regarding the separator. These <strong>de</strong>tails<br />

convinced the customer to or<strong>de</strong>r the Achenbach<br />

Optifoil technology:<br />

• driven rolls with big diameters at narrow<br />

roll distances and i<strong>de</strong>al strip guiding<br />

• shiftable rewin<strong>de</strong>r for a constant material<br />

rewinding geometry and a constant winding<br />

<strong>de</strong>nsity even beyond the diameter of the finish<br />

rolls<br />

• weight-balanced contact / pressure system<br />

as well as installation of load bearings into<br />

the bearing spots for best winding results<br />

• portal <strong>de</strong>sign of finish roll removal <strong>de</strong>vice<br />

for consi<strong>de</strong>rably shorter finish roll removal<br />

times; a handling system shiftable on floor<br />

level can thus be omitted, the upgra<strong>de</strong> with a<br />

pilotless transport system is possible without<br />

any problems.<br />

• empty spool handling concept, which applies<br />

the unwin<strong>de</strong>r very close to the entry<br />

roll to facilitate minimum material transport<br />

ways<br />

• roll changing concept, which allows the<br />

quick change of contact, application and backup<br />

rolls<br />

• all preparations to upgra<strong>de</strong> the separator<br />

with a pinhole <strong>de</strong>tector for quality assurance<br />

• highly mo<strong>de</strong>rn drive technology, here with<br />

two motors per winding level for a very exten<strong>de</strong>d<br />

winding tension range.<br />

The new rolling mill is equipped with the<br />

latest Optipure media systems and with the entire<br />

package of Optiroll i2 automation systems<br />

ma<strong>de</strong> by Achenbach. Outwardly resembling to<br />

the systems of 2007, KunShan <strong>Alu</strong>minium was<br />

very impressed by the mo<strong>de</strong>l-based controllers<br />

which have been implemented in the Optiroll<br />

automation systems in the meantime. These<br />

are mo<strong>de</strong>ls, which record the current operating<br />

condition of the rolling mill and hence calculate<br />

online-optimised controller parameters,<br />

which result in a consi<strong>de</strong>rably improved both,<br />

strip flatness and strip thickness tolerances.<br />
