Chatterton, Siemens VAI The roots of Siemens VAI as it stands today, as part of Siemens Plc’s Industry Sector, lead back to the Davy business who, during the 1980s and 1990s installed many Automatic Gauge Control (AGC) / Automatic Flatness Control (AFC) systems on cold mills using their System 2, 21 and KS2100 platforms. With advances in technology, support for these platforms is no longer guaranteed due to equipment obsolescence. As such producers are reliant on in-house spares and know-how to maintain the systems, and are therefore susceptible to excessive downtime if a breakdown occurs in these systems. Stuart North, project manager at Siemens VAI, comments: “This was the situation facing the Royal Mint on their single stand cold reversing mill at Llantrisant, Wales. Davy Mc- Kee had installed a System 21 AGC on the mill in the mid-1990s and had continued support of the system through a service contract with Siemens. After a significant breakdown in 2011, it was evident to both The Royal Mint and Siemens that the system had to be replaced.” According to Stuart, the objectives of the upgrade project were to • replace the existing System 21 automatic gauge system and main DC drives (mill, coiler, un-coiler) with a cost effective solution which would minimise downtime • identify any other major components which should be replaced either due to obsolescence or to provide either improved performance or an optimum solution • obtain at least the equivalent thickness tolerances as achieved with the existing System 21 • deliver the equipment within nine months and install and start-up the mill within a 10 day shutdown. The new AGC system was based on the latest Siemens VAI Siroll Alu TCS which is based on the Siroll suite of software and system solutions. The hardware backbone is the high performance Simatic TDC system.
