Request for Stop Sign – Merrywood Subdivision Within the Merrywoods Subdivision at the corner of Meadowlilly Crescent and Merrywood Drive is an uncontrolled `T` intersection (see below). An uncontrolled intersection is an intersection that does not have stop or yield signs directly assigning priority to traffic entering an intersection. The Ontario Highway Traffic Act stipulates that all traffic approaching an uncontrolled intersection must yield the right-of-way to traffic approaching on the right. Attached to this report is a request from a group of petitioners withing the subdivision asking that a stop sign be installed in this location. Currently Controlled Currently Uncontrolled 98
After review, and in the interest of public safety, staff is recommending a stop sign be installed at the intersection requested. The currently applicable “yield to traffic on the right rule” is not always fully understood by all traffic, and the current location is not signed with any directions for drivers. In addition staff have reviewed the location on site and have found that there is vegetation and other obstructions present that interfere with the vision of motorists approaching the intersection from Meadowlilly Crescent which would make a safe yield difficult for motorists. For these reasons staff recommends that this location is suitable for the placement of a stop sign facing west on Meadowlilly at the intersection. Should Council decide to support this recommendation staff will arrange for advertisements in the local paper of the Municipality’s intention to install a stop sign at the intersection to ensure there is public engagement prior to Council’s formal approval through by-law.
