The Aquafest Committee: The Aquafest Committee is a team of volunteers who have stepped up to the plate for the past four years. Jennifer Mossop, Co-chair: Responsibilities include: media relations, advertising and press releases; program sponsors; keynote speakers; entertainment contracts Janette Baillie, Co-Chair Responsibilities include: photo contest; sourcing local bands; sourcing children’s activities; designing brochures and pamphlets John Powell, Logistics Responsibilities include: securing sound systems; Lambton Shores and Rotary liaison on parking and beach logistics; exhibitor/vendor management; event signage placement Marissa Vaughan, Secretary-Treasurer: Responsibilities include: bank accounts; budgeting; financial reporting; database management; SWO community calendars; beach tent & security, program assistant to the co-chairs Dave Maguire, Lambton Shores Council Representative Program Managers: Sharon Callan, Volunteer Responsibilities include: sourcing student art; securing and administering student volunteers for set up and take down of art show Teresa Marie and Steph Purdy, Volunteers Responsibilities include: planning and execution of chowder competition; accommodating canoe display on River Road: organizing art show Stephanie Donaldson, Volunteer Responsibilities include: securing the Coast Guard for tours and education at the event Barb Ferris, Volunteer Responsibilities include: management and updates of Aquafest’s website http://www.grandbendaquafest.ca/ Alistair McKenzie and John Swick, Pinery Provincial Park Responsibilities include: canoe rides, movies, hikes at the Pinery Provincial Park Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority, Sponsor Responsibilities include: hands on education activities for the children at the event And a small army of Student, GB Legion, Rotary and Senior Volunteers (ranging from 25-35 in number) who organize and display student art and photos shots, man the doors to events, and provide security at the various venues during the event. Proposed 2013 Program includes: Children’s Learning Adventures, Student Art Contest and Show, Photo Contest and Sale, Art Exhibits, Face Painting, painting class, Beach glass jewelry making,, hikes, musical performances, Great Lakes Chowder Competition, and environmental exhibitors. 92
Grand Bend Aquafest 2012 Grand Bend Aquafest 2012 was held on August 10th, 11th and 12 th , 2012. For the fourth year running, Aquafest achieved its goals in raising awareness of water stewardship and supporting our community environmentally and economically. Aquafest 2012 was a three day event attracting more than 2000 people to our many events and attractions in five locations: Grand Bend Legion, Optimist Youth Centre, River Road, Pinery Provincial Park, and the Main Beach Grand Bend. The festival kicked off at the Grand Bend Legion with our keynote speaker and entertainer – Survivorman! (aka Les Stroud), and the Campfire Kings with song and story. His message to a riveted audience of more than 400 was succinct and potent “Water, the Ultimate Survival Tool!” Before, during and after the show, we featured the entries of our photo contest and attendees were encouraged to take in the absolutely amazing photographs celebrating the beauty of water and vote for the “Peoples Choice” Award. Over at the Optimist Youth Centre art awards were presented to students while proud parents and friends looked on. There were nearly 300 entries from over half a dozen schools in the area in the annual Student Art Contest and Show. The festival continued on Saturday under a big top tent at the main beach. Mother nature found favour with us this year as the lake was a dazzling, aquamarine blue. We couldn’t have hoped for anything better! For the children, there was native storytelling celebrating water, educational adventures from the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Association, Kryart Studios water 93
