Nonpoint sources <strong>of</strong> pollution are linked to<br />
agriculture and suburbanization (storm sewers,<br />
septic tank leachate, and housing construction).<br />
Development along <strong>the</strong> entire length <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> river is<br />
suspected <strong>of</strong> contributing significant quantities <strong>of</strong><br />
nutrients and sediments.<br />
Complexes<br />
Wetland<br />
EPA Priority wetland designation has been assigned<br />
to two areas within <strong>the</strong> Raritan River Basin in<br />
<strong>Morris</strong> <strong>County</strong>. Little Spruce Swamp, is located in<br />
Mount Olive. It provides habitat to "Federally listed<br />
plant species; . . . State imperiled and rare flora,<br />
including at least one extant record; and a State rare<br />

natural community." The major threat to this<br />
complex is impact from current and future<br />
development.<br />

The Lamington River Watershed, extends from<br />
Succasunna (Roxbury Township) to Hacklebarney<br />
(Chester Township). This area provides important<br />
"habitat <strong>for</strong> waterfowl and rails . . . State listed species<br />
(e.g. Barred owl, American bittern); and rare flora. Major<br />
threats consist <strong>of</strong> groundwater and surface water impacts<br />
by way <strong>of</strong> water table drawdown by wells, and<br />
development pressure to adjacent uplands, respectively." 2<br />
