Dry-Mesic Inland Mixed Oak Forest (Terrestrial - Closed Canopy)<br />
This plant community, fur<strong>the</strong>r categorized into two subtypes, occurs in both <strong>the</strong> Highlands and <strong>the</strong> Piedmont.<br />
The mixed oak <strong>for</strong>est provides us with an example <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> devastating change in character wrought by a single<br />
source, in this case <strong>the</strong> Chestnut blight. At one time <strong>the</strong> largest deciduous tree <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>ast, <strong>the</strong> American<br />
Chestnut no longer dominates this plant community but ra<strong>the</strong>r exists <strong>for</strong> an abbreviated time as a young<br />
sapling.<br />

slopes and ravines.<br />
