Talus Slope Community (Terrestrial - Open Canopy)<br />

This woodland, ranked imperiled-to-rare by <strong>the</strong> Heritage Program, occurs in <strong>the</strong> Highlands as well as <strong>the</strong><br />

Piedmont. It is found on steep ridge slopes, <strong>of</strong>ten at <strong>the</strong> base <strong>of</strong> cliffs, atop rockslide aftermath.<br />

Dominant Trees: Oak, Chestnut Pine, Eastern White<br />

Birch, Sweet Oak, Scrub Pine, Pitch<br />

Rare Species: Fly Honeysuckle Pine, Red<br />

Allegheny Vine Mountain Clematis Sedge, Dewey's<br />

Birch, Paper Mountain Spleenwort Skunk Currant<br />

Successional Field (Terrestrial - Open Canopy)<br />

The rolling fields which blanket much <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> county and contribute to its aes<strong>the</strong>tic charm are ei<strong>the</strong>r pastures,<br />

farmlands, or vacant lands. When allowed to progress through <strong>the</strong> multi-phased process <strong>of</strong> succession, a field<br />

will transition from annuals to perennials, to shrubs, and finally to trees. Within 50-60 years' time a <strong>for</strong>mer<br />

field will be converted into a woodland. In this region succession can be expected to result in <strong>the</strong> following<br />

plant communities.<br />
