Special Areas<br />
Several areas have received designations due to <strong>the</strong> rarity and diversity <strong>of</strong> species within<br />
<strong>the</strong> specific ecosystem. To avoid duplication, areas with multiple designations have been<br />
listed according to <strong>the</strong> program <strong>of</strong>fering <strong>the</strong> most extensive description.<br />
The <strong>Natural</strong> Areas System administered by <strong>Natural</strong> Lands <strong>Management</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> NJ DEP is<br />
“designed to preserve and protect <strong>the</strong> habitats <strong>of</strong> rare or endangered plants and animals,<br />

and representative examples <strong>of</strong> ecosystems <strong>of</strong> New Jersey.” Of <strong>the</strong> <strong>for</strong>ty-two <strong>of</strong>ficially<br />
designated sites, 4 are located in <strong>Morris</strong> <strong>County</strong>: Black River, Farny, Hacklebarney, and<br />
Troy Meadows <strong>Natural</strong> Areas.<br />

HACKLEBARNEY NATURAL AREA<br />
The Hacklebarney <strong>Natural</strong> Area spans portions <strong>of</strong> Chester and Washington Townships. <strong>Natural</strong> features<br />
include ridges, moderate to steep hillsides, and ravine walls. The desire to preserve <strong>the</strong> river ravine, nor<strong>the</strong>rn<br />
hemlock/mixed hardwood <strong>for</strong>ests, and rare species' habitats, prompted inclusion <strong>of</strong> this region in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Natural</strong><br />
Areas System. O<strong>the</strong>r communities include mixed oak/hardwood <strong>for</strong>est and <strong>the</strong> transitional <strong>for</strong>est. Flora, o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
than those already mentioned in <strong>the</strong>se specific communities are listed below.<br />
