COMMUNITY all the plant and animal populations occupying a given area.
ECOSYSTEM includes all components, living and not, of an environment.
ENDANGERED SPECIES one “whose prospects for survival in New Jersey are in immediate danger
because of a loss or change of habitat, over-exploitation, predation, competition or disease. Immediate
assistance is needed to prevent extinction.” 6
FRAGMENTATION “breaking up of continuous areas of habitat into smaller parcels.” 7
HABITAT all the “physical features and biological characteristics needed to provide food and shelter for
wildlife.” 8
LANDSCAPE “a large land area that contains habitat for wildlife.” 9
SPECIES DIVERSITY richness and abundance of a species in a given area.
TAXA plural of taxon, a group of organisms sharing common characteristics in
varying degrees of distinction that constitute one of the categories in taxonomic
classification, such as a phylum, order family, genus, or species. 10
THREATENED SPECIES one which “may become endangered if conditions
surrounding the species begin or continue to deteriorate.” 11
