CARRYING CAPACITY The number <strong>of</strong> inhabitants that an ecosystem can support at a given time.<br />

COMMUNITY All <strong>the</strong> plant and animal populations occupying a given area.<br />

CRITICAL HABITAT Habitat, essential to some wildlife species, threatened by one or more factors.<br />

ECOSYSTEM includes all components, living and not, <strong>of</strong> an environment.<br />

ENDANGERED A species "whose prospects <strong>for</strong> survival in New Jersey are in immediate danger because <strong>of</strong> a<br />

loss or change <strong>of</strong> habitat, over-exploitation, predation, competition or disease. Immediate assistance is needed to<br />

prevent extinction." 20<br />

HABITAT The sum <strong>of</strong> conditions constituting an area where plants and animals live.<br />

HIBERNACULA<br />

A mine or cave used <strong>for</strong> hibernation.<br />

INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT “A systematic approach to minimizing undesirable pest damage by<br />

maintaining a landscape planting that is part <strong>of</strong> a functioning ecosystem, determining acceptable pest population<br />

and damage levels, and by considering all possible pest control options be<strong>for</strong>e action to control is taken.” 21<br />

NEOTROPICAL MIGRANTS Birds that breed in <strong>the</strong> temperate zone <strong>for</strong>ests <strong>of</strong> Canada and <strong>the</strong> U.S., and<br />

spend <strong>the</strong> remainder <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> year in tropical and subtropical areas to <strong>the</strong> south <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> U.S. (e.g., ruddy turnstone,<br />

yellow-billed cuckoo, common nighthawk, yellow-bellied flycatcher, scarlet tanager, bobolink, red-eyed vireo and<br />

Cape May warbler).<br />

POPULATION The total number <strong>of</strong> animals <strong>of</strong> a single kind (species) that live in a common geographical area<br />

at a given time.<br />

SUCCESSION A sequence <strong>of</strong> plant and animal communities which replace one ano<strong>the</strong>r in a given area<br />

determined by climate.<br />

THREATENED A species which "may become endangered if conditions surrounding <strong>the</strong> species begin or<br />

continue to deteriorate." 22<br />
