Competences and qualifications young people need to make the successful first step into
labour market after school concern mainly:
recognition of the local and regional labour market
information about labour market in various European countries
information about possibilities of apprentices and practices in various European countries
recognition of vocational interests
recognition of abilities and aptitudes
recognition of competences
soft skills
achievement motivation
self recognition and self insight
etc.
Slovakia
Missing competences of contemporary school‐leavers have been stated according to the
statements of employers. The biggest insufficiencies are in active knowledge of at least one
foreign language (English), management, marketing, informatics, driving licence and
knowledge of basic legal relations on labour market, relations with central offices (OLSAF,
Social insurance company, tax office, etc.). One of the biggest reservations about schoolleavers
is lack of practical skills and experience as well as deficit in theoretical knowledge.
Often it is required to innovate curriculum according to current news in science and
technology. Ability to connect theories with praxis is inevitable. Vocational schools should
provide a space for practice of basic skills and working habits e.g. by praxis in companies in the
length of at least 3 weeks.
School‐leavers should have a positive work attitude, an active approach to problem solving,
independence and communication skills. They should be able to solve conflicts with co‐
