6. International Collaboration<br />

6.1 Visit <strong>of</strong> President & CEO,<br />

Commonwealth <strong>of</strong> Learning<br />

Sir John Daniel, President & CEO <strong>of</strong> Commonwealth<br />

<strong>of</strong> Learning visited NIOS on 13 November <strong>2009</strong>.He<br />

addressed the <strong>of</strong>ficers <strong>of</strong> NIOS and shared his<br />

perspectives on the challenges and opportunities <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Open</strong> Distance Learning (ODL) at school level. <strong>The</strong><br />

issue <strong>of</strong> the creation <strong>of</strong> <strong>Open</strong> Educational Resources<br />

(OER) and sharing <strong>of</strong> materials by the member<br />

countries was discussed. It was proposed that before<br />

the year end a workshop on creating OER under<br />

global intellectual commons with participation from<br />

various Commonwealth Countries may be organized.<br />

Sir Daniel was joined by Dr. Sridhar, Director,<br />

Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia<br />

(CEMCA) who discussed the enormous media<br />

possibilities.<br />

6.2 International Workshop on<br />

“Monitoring and Evaluation for<br />

<strong>Open</strong> Schools”<br />

Preparation to organise an international workshop on<br />

"Monitoring and Evaluation for <strong>Open</strong> Schools" started<br />

in December, <strong>2009</strong>/January, 20<strong>10</strong>. <strong>The</strong> workshop<br />

was to be held in collaboration with COL to which<br />

delegates from various countries like Bangladesh,<br />

Pakistan and Srilanka and various State <strong>Open</strong> Schools<br />

<strong>of</strong> India were to be invited. It was felt that various<br />

issues and challenges being faced by the <strong>Open</strong><br />

Schools today in India and other South Asian<br />

Countries were similar. Hence, deliberations on<br />

common issues specially in areas <strong>of</strong> Evaluation for<br />

and Monitoring <strong>of</strong> <strong>Open</strong> Schools were essential.<br />

<strong>The</strong> outcomes envisaged for the workshop were (i)<br />

an increased understanding <strong>of</strong> Monitoring and<br />

Evaluation, (ii) ability to write indicators as pertaining<br />

to their work in open schooling and (iii) to contribute<br />

to the Monitoring and Evaluation Framework.<br />

It was proposed that a framework on how to<br />

monitor and evaluate the activities <strong>of</strong> the open<br />

schooling system may developed. This would enable<br />

<strong>Open</strong> Schools to emerge as quality institutions in<br />

the Asian region to achieve the goals <strong>of</strong> education<br />

for all.<br />

This workshop was to be organised as the first<br />

programme <strong>of</strong> COMOSA as a good governance<br />

initiative.<br />

6.3 Adolescence Education<br />

Programme<br />

NIOS is presently engaged in implementing<br />

Adolescence Education Programme (AEP)<br />

supported by UNFPA under the Project Title: Country<br />

Programme VII –Reproductive Health.<br />

In tandem with the recommendations <strong>of</strong> the <strong>National</strong><br />

Curriculum Framework (NCF), 2005 which outlines<br />

that educational processes should engage learners in<br />

creating knowledge that is relevant to their experiences,<br />

promote healthy attitudes and enable them to think<br />

critically and respond to real-life situations in positive<br />

and responsible ways, UNFPA India supports the<br />

Ministry <strong>of</strong> Human Resource Development’s<br />

(MHRD) Adolescence Education Program (AEP).<br />

By building on relevant experiences <strong>of</strong> young people,<br />

the program focuses on enhancing life skills to enable<br />

young people to tackle real-life situations effectively.<br />

Against this backdrop, Adolescence Education<br />

Program (AEP) works through both co-curricular and<br />

curricular formats.<br />

6.4 Commonwealth <strong>Open</strong> <strong>Schooling</strong><br />

Association (COMOSA)<br />

Inaugural Meeting<br />

A two day inaugural meeting <strong>of</strong> the Commonwealth<br />

<strong>Open</strong> <strong>Schooling</strong> Association (COMOSA) held at<br />

New Delhi from 23 to 24 November, <strong>2009</strong> organized<br />

by Commonwealth <strong>of</strong> Learning adopted the<br />

Constitution <strong>of</strong> COMOSA. COMOSA is a<br />

democratic, collaborative and futuristic organization<br />

based on mutual refspect and committed to support<br />
