<strong>National</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Open</strong> <strong>Schooling</strong><br />
and Orissa are at an advanced stage. <strong>The</strong><br />
total registration in State <strong>Open</strong> Schools (SOSs) is<br />
about 7 lakhs.<br />
<strong>The</strong> annual meeting <strong>of</strong> NCOS was inaugurated by<br />
the Hon’ble Minister <strong>of</strong> HRD, Sh. Kapil Sibal on<br />
February 15, 20<strong>10</strong> which was presided over by the<br />
Hon’ble Minister <strong>of</strong> State, MHRD, Smt. D.<br />
Purandeswari.<br />
Information and Communication<br />
Technology<br />
<strong>The</strong> NIOS exploits the Information and<br />
Communication Technology (ICT) optimally both to<br />
help learners learn their courses and also for<br />
maintaining database for various sub-systems such<br />
as admission and evaluation.<br />
During the year the admission data <strong>of</strong> over 4,19,702<br />
students was processed, and the data processing for<br />
evaluation purposes was undertaken for 6,77,000<br />
students.<br />
NIOS now provides <strong>10</strong>0% facility <strong>of</strong> on-line 24x7<br />
admissions. <strong>The</strong> NIOS website, updated on regular<br />
basis provides useful information and interface to<br />
public, study centres and students. <strong>The</strong> website went<br />
through an over haul during this year.<br />
<strong>The</strong> unit now provides facility for e-accreditation for<br />
setting up study centres. <strong>The</strong> Learner Support Centre<br />
provides solution to various queries from students and<br />
public. <strong>The</strong> unit has now extended the facility <strong>of</strong> On-<br />
Demand Examination system to all the Regional<br />
Centres. <strong>The</strong> unit also makes arrangement for mobile<br />
phone support for different information, such as<br />
examiantion results.<br />
Library Documentation and Archival<br />
Services<br />
<strong>The</strong> NIOS Library provides a rich collection <strong>of</strong> books<br />
and journals to the faculty and visitors. During the<br />
year, the Library scanned about 4,350 newspapers,<br />
journals etc., and collected 7<strong>10</strong> news items related to<br />
<strong>Open</strong> <strong>Schooling</strong>. <strong>The</strong> Archive Section this year received<br />
about 200 documents. A total <strong>of</strong> 671 books, 12 CDs,<br />
and 48 documents were added to the collection <strong>of</strong> the<br />
library. <strong>The</strong> Library subscribes 76 journals, 23<br />
magazines, 19 newspapers and 2 weekly publications<br />
on a regular basis. <strong>The</strong> total collection now stands at<br />
17,330 books, 14,7<strong>10</strong> journals, and 72 CDs.<br />
<strong>The</strong> library provides various services to the members<br />
for information on new arrivals and on topics covered<br />
in the journals.<br />
<strong>The</strong> NIOS has now initiated the process <strong>of</strong> setting up<br />
libraries at the Regional Centres for staff and visitors<br />
in the first phase which may also be open for learners<br />
later.<br />
Students Support Services<br />
<strong>The</strong> Students Support Services (SSS) Department<br />
<strong>of</strong> NIOS is responsible for providing support to<br />
learners in their learning and related issues. It also<br />
does the work <strong>of</strong> accrediting study centres for<br />
academic programmes. As a major systematic<br />
development, the department will henceforth look<br />
after setting up <strong>of</strong> all types <strong>of</strong> centres which were<br />
earlier scattered in various departments.<br />
During the year altogether 4,19,702 students took<br />
admission in Secondary and Sr. Secondary Courses<br />
registering 11.29% increase over the last years<br />
admissions. <strong>The</strong> highest admission was from Delhi<br />
(28.31%) followed by Chandigarh (<strong>16.6</strong>%). Out <strong>of</strong><br />
the total strength, 51% took admission in Secondary<br />
courses and 49% in the Sr. Secondary courses. In<br />
the regional mediums (Telugu, Urdu, Marathi,<br />
Gujarati, Malayalam, and Oriya) the total admissions<br />
were 12,499. Of the total enrolment 71.94% students<br />
were from General category, 12.15% from SC, 6.8%<br />
from ST, 0.11% from Ex Servicemen 0.48% from<br />
handicapped and 8.52% from OBC category. This<br />
trend was almost the same as in the previous year.<br />
Male students were 70.09% and female students were<br />
29.89% which is also comparable to the last year's<br />
trend. <strong>The</strong> maximum students were in the age group<br />
14-20 years (71.84%) followed by 21-25 years<br />
(16.98%) and 26-30 years (5.75%). <strong>The</strong>re was a<br />
reduction in first and last group and increase in the<br />
second group in comparision to previous year.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Department accredited several new study centres<br />
during the year and the total strength <strong>of</strong> the AIs as on<br />
March 31 , 20<strong>10</strong> stands at 2,307 including 41 special<br />
Accredited Institutions for Education <strong>of</strong><br />
Disadvantaged spread all over the country. <strong>The</strong><br />
number <strong>of</strong> AIs was 2,144 in the previous year. <strong>The</strong><br />
highest number <strong>of</strong> AIs were in UP (323), closely<br />
followed by Bihar (321), and then Delhi (200). NIOS<br />
has 18 study centres in UAE and Nepal.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Department organised 2 meetings for the Regional<br />
Directors, and organised 8 orientation programmes<br />
for the Coordinators <strong>of</strong> AIs.<br />
Regional Services<br />
<strong>The</strong> Regional Centres (RCs) are a very vital interface<br />
between NIOS and students, study centres, state<br />
