4 Temporary Construction <strong>Service</strong><br />
4.1 General<br />
Upon request, the <strong>Power</strong> Company will supply temporary service at a location adjacent to the<br />
<strong>Power</strong> Company’s facilities as provided for in applicable rules and tariffs. The <strong>Power</strong> Company<br />
will not energize a temporary service if the customer-provided service pole does not meet the<br />
requirements listed in Section 4.2.<br />
Always locate temporary services for construction work so to protect the meter from accidental<br />
damage. When practical, install temporary services in a location usable throughout the entire<br />
construction period. When the <strong>Power</strong> Company must relocate a temporary service, the contractor<br />
or customer shall bear the relocation cost in accordance with the <strong>Power</strong> Company’s schedule of<br />
charges.<br />
4.2 Construction Criteria For Temporary <strong>Service</strong><br />
Figures 4.2.1 and 4.2.2 show typical installations for overhead and underground temporary<br />
construction services. Following is a list of requirements these structures must meet before the<br />
<strong>Power</strong> Company will provide service.<br />
<strong>Requirements</strong>:<br />
1. To ensure strength, the pole or post must be free of any defects which may weaken the wood,<br />
such as sucker knots and spike knots larger than 1 / 3 of any face. Checks greater than 1 / 2 -inch<br />
wide are not permitted, and no visible wood decay is allowed.<br />
2. Overhead temporary construction service poles and timbers shall be pressure- or<br />
thermally-treated with an approved American Wood Preservatives Association standardized<br />
preservative.<br />
3. The pole or timber shall be no less than 20 feet long. A pole shall be no less than 5 1 / 2 inches<br />
in diameter at the top, or a minimum (nominal) 6”×6” timber. The pole or timber shall be set<br />
no less than 5 feet (5') below ground level with suitable backfill. The pole or timber length<br />
minimum is 25 feet (25') if the service drop crosses a road or traffic area. The pole or timber<br />
shall be pressure- or thermally-treated with an approved preservative.<br />
4. The code-enforcing agency may require the grounding connection to be visible when an<br />
electrical inspection is made.<br />
5. All temporary services except single-phase, 120/240V, 200 amp or less, shall be constructed<br />
in accordance with Section 10, Non-Residential <strong>Service</strong>s.<br />
6. Installations in unstable soil shall require guying or bracing. Installations in stable soil shall<br />
adhere to the conductor length limits listed in Table 4.2.1.<br />
The duration of a temporary service cannot exceed 180 days (120 days in California).<br />
