5 Clearances<br />
This section provides information on required clearances for meter sockets, clear working space, overhead<br />
services, and underground services.<br />
5.1 Meter Clearances and Locations<br />
The customer must provide suitable space and provisions for mounting a meter base at a location<br />
approved by the <strong>Power</strong> Company. Both the customer and the <strong>Power</strong> Company share an interest in<br />
providing a location of the utmost convenience to both parties for reading, testing, repairing,<br />
disconnecting, and replacing meters.<br />
All metering equipment shall be installed in locations that are accessible to <strong>Power</strong> Company<br />
employees and their equipment.<br />
Metering equipment shall not be installed in locations such as:<br />
1. Any location defined by NEC as a hazardous location for electrical equipment.<br />
2. Directly over any window well, stairway, ramp, or steps.<br />
3. A doorway.<br />
4. Within 3 feet of a window that has a view of living space or restrooms.<br />
5. Any place where moisture, fumes, or dust may interfere with the meter’s operation or may<br />
damage the meter.<br />
6. Any surface subject to excessive vibration, as determined by the <strong>Power</strong> Company.<br />
7. <strong>Power</strong> Company poles, transformers, cabinets or other equipment.<br />
8. An area likely to be fenced.<br />
9. A location where the door to the meter cabinet or meter face is obstructed (for instance, areas<br />
near property lines, walkways, and driveways).<br />
10. A drive-through service entrance side of a non-residential building.<br />
11. On mobile structures such as trailers, barges, cranes, dredges, draglines, mobile pumping<br />
equipment, boat slips, or floating dwelling units such as houseboats.<br />
12. Closer than 36 inches horizontally from gas meters, gas valves, fixed or threaded fittings,<br />
separable valves or unions, or regulators. (See ESR White Paper 5—Pipe Fittings.)<br />
13. Areas within 25 feet of fuel storage units, including generator fuel tanks, unless prior<br />
approval is obtained from the <strong>Power</strong> Company.<br />
14. Any unsafe or inconvenient location.<br />
This manual shall be distributed and interpreted in its entirety. Individual pages will not represent all the requirements necessary for an installation.<br />
17
