2011 Electric Service Requirements, 2 nd Edition
Section 7
7.7.2 Underground Service to Wall-Mounted Meters
Installation requirements for underground service to wall-mounted meters are listed below.
These requirements are in addition to the general requirements given in Section 7.6 and the
requirements for underground service in Section 7.7.1.
Requirements:
1. The meter base and conduit shall be securely attached to the structure.
2. The meter socket shall be plumb when inspected.
3. 2” x 4” back supports or 5/16” molly screws are required.
4. Conduit and sleeve are required when passing through a paved area adjacent to
building foundations.
5. Manufactured or field bends made of PVC matching the quality of factory bends may
be used directly under the meter enclosure to align the ground riser sweep with the
meter socket. Field bends shall be free of flattening, cracks or burns. The minimum
bending radius shall be 36”. The contractor is responsible for proofing all conduit
systems.
6. For brick veneer or concrete block, a 1/4” x 3 1/4” lead sleeve expansion bolt in the
joint shall be used in place of lag screws on anchor straps.
7. The meter enclosure knockout diameter shall be able to receive the conduit riser.
When 3” conduit is required and a flush-mount meter enclosure is installed, a 2”x6”
stud wall must be constructed. See Section 6 for conduit requirements.
8. When a 3” knockout is not available, a swedge may be used to transition to a smaller
conduit size. Power Company approval shall be obtained prior to installation.
9. Above-ground conduit shall be Schedule 40 PVC or better. Some jurisdictions may
require conduit grades better than Schedule 40; consult the local governing code.
10. The electrical label or permit shall be displayed on the meter base.
Figure 7.7.2 shows a typical installation of a meter and associated hardware for surface
and flush wall-mounted meters.
