2011 Electric Service Requirements, 2 nd Edition
7.8.3 Overhead Service to Meters Mounted on Poles
When overhead service meter bases cannot be mounted on the home using the criteria
established in the rest of this book, the Power Company allows meters to be installed on
customer-owned poles. See Section 3.4.5 for required disconnects and protective devices.
Installation requirements for overhead service to meters mounted on poles are listed below.
These requirements are in addition to the general requirements given in Section 7.6 and the
requirements for overhead service in Section 7.8.1.
Requirements:
1. The customer shall install the meter base and service equipment on a wood pole no
less than 25 feet long and 5- 1 / 2 inches in diameter at the top, or a (nominal) 6” × 6” ×
25’ timber, set no less than five feet below ground level, with gravel backfill. The
pole shall be pressure- or thermally-treated with an American Wood Preservative
Association-approved preservative.
2. The pole or timber shall be accessible by Power Company power-lift aerial
equipment.
3. The pole height must provide required clearance for the Power Company’s service
drop and any telephone, cable TV, or other attachments. See Section 5 for Power
Company clearances and contact the telephone company and CATV Co. for required
clearances
4. The customer is responsible for all material and labor beyond the service point at the
customer’s 24-inch tail.
5. Installations in stable soil shall adhere to the conductor length limits listed in Table
7.8.3.
6. Installations in unstable soil require guying or bracing. If the space is too restrictive
for guying, contact the Power Company.
7. Where two or more meters are located side-by-side (such as with duplexes or in
mobile home parks), the meter socket enclosure shall be permanently labeled with the
space or berth number.
8. Where three or more poles, posts, or pedestals are clustered in mobile home parks, the
customer shall provide equipment with AIC ratings to accommodate the maximum
available fault current. The Power Company will provide information on the
calculated maximum available fault current upon request.
