Honoring the late Brother Joseph W. <strong>Stander</strong>, S.M., Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Mathematics and Provost (1974-<br />

1989), the <strong>Stander</strong> <strong>Symposium</strong> celebrates academic excellence, rich collaborations and many<br />

forms <strong>of</strong> intellectual, artistic, and spiritual growth. The career <strong>of</strong> Brother Joe embodied the spirit<br />

<strong>of</strong> collaboration and the <strong>Stander</strong> <strong>Symposium</strong> stands as a continuing tribute to him and all who<br />

carry on the Marianist tradition <strong>of</strong> education through community.<br />

A distinctive spirit permeates student research at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dayton</strong>. The faculty and students<br />

<strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> are determined that “a community <strong>of</strong> learners” is not a cliche but a realistic<br />

goal. Thus the <strong>University</strong> fosters an atmosphere that nurtures productive collaboration and a<br />

shared search for excellence in learning and in research. The <strong>Stander</strong> <strong>Symposium</strong> is a day-anda-half<br />

long event, and constitutes the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dayton</strong>’s principal annual celebration <strong>of</strong> academic<br />

excellence. The <strong>Symposium</strong> features a keynote speaker, poster sessions, hands-on activities,<br />

performances, exhibits, oral presentations and highlights <strong>of</strong> capstone course work.<br />

All students at the university engaging in research, creative endeavors, and other forms <strong>of</strong> innovative<br />

thinking are encouraged to participate in this student research symposium. Student<br />

attendees are key members <strong>of</strong> a critically reflective audience for their peers. Faculty members<br />

serve as mentors and leaders for many <strong>of</strong> these projects and are the driving force behind scholarship<br />

in their fields. The efforts <strong>of</strong> students, faculty, and staff are critical to making this event<br />

successful year after year.<br />
