SIMPSON STRAIT
GENERAL INFORMATION
Canadian Charts 7083,7736,7760 (see 1.14)
General description
15.56
1 Simpson Strait, which lies between King William
Island on the N and Adelaide Peninsula on the S,
connects Queen Maud Gulf with Rasmussen Basin,
45 miles ESE.
The strait is entered from W between Cape John
Herschel (68°41′N 98°04′W) and Cape Geddes,
8 miles SSE. Its E limit lies between Booth Point
(68°29′N 96°16′W) and Ogle Point, 14 miles SE.
15.57
1 The W part of the strait, between the entrance and
a narrows, 16 miles ESE, is greatly encumbered with
small islands, islets and rocks concentrated, mainly,
on the S and shallower side.
2 The islands are generally low-lying, although some
have elevations up to 15 or 30 m, and are mostly
composed of stones and boulders. From seaward,
they appear to merge with each other and are difficult
to distinguish, both individually and from the adjacent
shoreline. Alicia Island (15.73) is radar conspicuous.
In the narrows, Simpson Strait is only about
1¾ miles wide and the navigable channel is reduced
to a width of about 7 cables by off-lying islands and
dangers.
Ice
15.58
1 Break-up commences in late July and by
mid-August the strait is normally clear of ice.
Freeze-up commences in early October. The dates
are much affected by variations in weather conditions.
Tidal streams
15.59
1 From brief, intermittent observations, the tidal
streams appear to set roughly along the axis of the
strait, except in the vicinity of the islands, islets and
shoals, where there are marked changes of direction,
tide rips and eddies.
In the narrows, a W-going stream of 2 kn has been
observed, followed by a stronger E-going stream for a
shorter period. At times a stream with a rate of 4 kn
has been experienced in the strait, and up to 7 kn S
of Eta Island (68°39′⋅40N 97°23′⋅33W) (15.67).
