After the success of last year’s mass
scooter ride to Whitby, for many this
year’s Whitby Run was the best one yet
– Fun with a capital F!
Organised by yours truly and in TAG plus my own
website ‘Italjet Dragster.com’ the date was set months in
advance giving riders time to plan ahead. The event took
place on a Sunday when the roads would be a lot
quieter. As the organiser, I had a good few months to
think about how the event could be improved. One thing
you can’t plan is the weather, but I’m glad to say
conditions couldn’t have been better. Blue sky, glorious
sunshine, great roads, beautiful scenery… What more
could you ask for?
The event had been subjected to a few pre-conceived ideas on
a certain maxi-scooter forum even before the ride began. But like
last year everyone was out simply for a good ride. You’ll always
get the odd ‘boy racer’ on a run like this, as it attracts riders of all
ages. But I have to say that on the whole there was very little
‘tomfoolery’. In terms of ‘chavs pulling wheelies’, well, there was
the odd wheelie from the likes of stunt rider Rich ‘One Wheel’s
Enough’ Haywood, but this was to be expected. As for ‘ladies in
gold knickers’, well there weren’t any of those, sadly…

How many are you expecting mate?” I
replied. As it happened, 95 scooters
were counted at The Stakesby Arms and
that’s not including riders who didn’t
make it due to breakdowns, picnics or
scenic tours... With a barbecue, beer
and a live band (‘Skamania’ from
Newcastle) there was a great
atmosphere. TAG was also on hand
giving away magazines and doing an
‘on-the-spot’ custom show. There was a
real mix of bikes ranging from 50cc
