Owner: Grant Odell
Age: 20
Scooter club: Northernline SC and
Steel City SC Sheffield
Job: Anyone got one going?
First interest in scooters: Seven
years ago, when my dad renewed
his interest in the scooter scene.
We stripped and rebuilt a shed of a
Vespa GT together and I was
hooked!
First scooter: Vespa 50 Special;
electrics were shot and lights had
to run off a 12v DC dry cell battery
to pass MoT
Favourite scooter model: Anything
with a bit of thought and imagination
Favourite style of custom
scooter: Radical street-racer
First rally: Bridlington late 90s by car
with mum and dad; by scooter should
have been Skegness 2001, but the
crank bearing seized at 80mph.
Then nearly hit a runaway horse
on my dad’s P200E that
rescued me!
Favourite/worst rally:
Hopefully still to come –
What do you think after
the previous response!
Other scooters: SR50 kitted,
Runner SP; kitted, donor Runner
Funniest scooter related
experience: Big Earls WSSC,
stunting at Shires Rally! Sorry Earl
Favourite dealers: On 2 Wheels,
Chiselspeed, Absolutely Scooters
Any advice or tips: Have a
go youself where possible and have
alternative transport
Thanks: Mum and dad for support
and putting up with me;
Tony at On 2 Wheels
scooters back in the 70s he decided to
return to the fold seven years ago and as
such nurtured Grant’s interest and gave
advice where possible.
As a starting canvas the Dragster’s
futuristic shape, angular lines and
aggressive ride position would always
lend itself to a science fiction theme.
With this in mind the panel work was
removed and prepared. This was all
carried out by MP Graphics who first laid
on the two-tone aqua ground colour before
adding the relevant airbrushing. Muralwise
the machine boasts a multitude of
images (both heroic and villainic) from a
mixture of the films. These include Yoda,
Darth Maul and the infamous Darth Vader.
These have been cleverly placed around
the machine and held together with a
mixture of fogging and smaller murals to
create a complete pictorial masterpiece.
My personal favourite being the way the
Sith Lord emerges from the radiator vent.
While this was being carried out, other
parts of the machine were upgraded,
replaced or decorated. The power output
of the machine would have to come up to
the standard expected of a show vehicle.
This was undertaken by Grant and
Colin, using various after-market tuning
parts from Polini and Malossi. Several
engine strips and rebuilds later they have
finally come up with a motor that is both
potent and reliable. Next the handling and
suspension were upgraded to match the
gain in power delivery.
This was achieved using
after-market suspension
units from Chiselspeed and
high quality brake lines and
pads. Finally the little pieces
that make a bike unique
were added like the
Gilera Ice rear hugger
and Runner fairing.
After six months and nearly £3500 the
‘finished’ machine came together. I first
viewed it at the VFM, ‘Run to the Shires’
Rally this year and was impressed with
both the finish and overall effect, as were
many of the other punters. This was
confirmed when the judges awarded it
Best Auto, much to the satisfaction of
Grant. So there you have it, well done to
both Grant and his dad, the new
generation of scooter
riders have arrived now
either move over
‘baldies’ or try and keep
up! Viva la Darkside!
