IGGY SAYS:
If you think the CPI is suffering from an
identity crisis then the DNA needs
counselling! The Gilera DNA caused a stir
when it was first released in 2001 and you
can’t argue with the fact that no matter how
you look at it, it’s more motorbike than
scooter, but the DNA has found its own niche
market and has helped to pave the way for
the larger capacity twist and go hybrids of the
future, good news as far as I’m concerned.
I think the styling of the DNA is starting to
look a bit dated now, especially when it’s put
up against some of the sporty new models
like the GP1 and GTR and it’d be nice to see
a revamp before too long. As a fine handling
machine though the Gilera comes up trumps
and will appeal to anybody who’s more
inclined to ride a bike rather than a scooter.
I like the riding position and feel of
this machine. It corners well, stops well
and from a standing start it’s no couch
potato either. It took less than eight
seconds to reach an indicated 30mph
which puts it into a respectable second
position out of the nine machines we
tested. If you’re looking for something
slightly different to a scooter but
with all the ‘twist and go’
practicalities and ease of use that
goes with them (for instance, a
lockable helmet bay is cleverly
hidden underneath the tank which
means the seat height can be kept
nice and low, good news for shorter
riders) then the DNA is certainly worth
checking out.
