Mark Shirley ready for action X-Race 2005 Series - RESULTS (ROUND 5) Santa Pod Raceway, Bedfordshire 13 August 2005 Results comprise points gained (10 points for first place, nine points for second place and so on) in each class. QUICKEST 1/4 MILE 12.3 Class 10 Joe Elliott PM Sprinter 172cc 12.604 @ 97.62mph 9 Andy Pearson PSN 'Aero' Sprinter 172cc 13.392 @ 93.33mph 8 Stuart Owen Lambretta 244cc 13.48 @ 95.33mph SHOOTING STARS In the lead with a clean sweep of 50 points (10 point wins at every round) is Joe Elliott who no longer races his Dragster ‘Eliminator’ (in the series), but instead rides the super-fast 172cc 40hp PM Sprinter built by tuning guru Paul Melici at PM Tuning in Lancaster. These guys know what they’re doing. While the conditions were poor at Santa Pod, Joe still managed to achieve a 12.604 @ 97.62mph despite a strong sidewind. Day two of the Hijack (14th August) was a public RWYB (Run What Ya Brung), Joe managed to set a new British record on the PM Sprinter with an amazing time of 12.049 @ 103.89mph. This is now (unofficially) the current quickest quarter-mile record (one way time) on a scooter in the UK. Congratulations to Joe and PM Tuning. An 11-second run is now very close indeed. Big bike v scooter Behind Joe is Andy Pearson, on 45 points, who has consistently come second at every round thus far on the PSN Aero Sprinter. Andy’s quickest time this season currently stands at 12.64 @ 100mph which he achieved at Elvington at the start of the series, which is still a formidable result. Andy’s times have actually gone slower over the season. With the final round still to go, there’s still time for him to beat his record though. Currently on his way to a first place win in the 13.5 Class on 44 points is veteran Richard Baker on his trusty ‘Frightened Chicken’ 238cc Lambretta. Richard has stuck with it all year attending every round. He’s also the only rider in the 13.5 Class to hit a ton. His quickest quarter-mile time this season stands at 13.68 @ 92mph at East Kirkby back in June. With some changes to his gearbox at the Adam Monan on the Two Wheels Ahead sprinter last round, Richard has yet to test the result of his labours at the next round at Elvington, so we’ll see if it pays off… Good luck Richard. Just behind Richard is yours truly, on 32 points after four rounds. Which leaves Graeme Jones in third place on 25 points after just three rounds. Kevin Jones now has a bit of catching up to do and needs a good performance at Elvington if he’s to be in with a chance. Down in the 15.5 Class, Martin Hill and Alan Day are battling it out for championship points (both of them are now neck and neck on 37 points). Who knows what could happen at the final round? In the far reaches of the 17.5 Class, Yan Downie is in the lead with 38 points after four rounds; a first place victory is once again on the cards for Yan. Round 5 at Santa Pod saw a number of new entries to the series, but by the time you read this the regulars will have battled it out for those remaining points and the final showdown at Elvington will have taken place. This is the time of the year when anything can happen….
