Final Plan Alignment with State and Regional Strategic Directions Planning Initiatives Planning SA has recently initiated the Far North and Mid North Regional Land Use Frameworks to guide future land use and development in these regions. Within this context, tourism is an important community development opportunity that requires detailed economic, social and environmental planning and management. This Strategic Tourism Plan will provide a clear vision and directions for tourism growth within the Flinders Ranges and Outback South Australia over the next 20 years, and will demonstrate how each of the tourism partners can drive and implement change. Importantly, this Plan will help align tourism efforts with the spatial plans. Southern Flinders Ranges Cycle Tourism Development Master Plan The three Councils comprising the Southern Flinders Ranges region have been developing a cycle tourism master plan for the region. This master plan is a short, medium and long term plan that will drive investment in the region to create a range of tourism experiences. It has resulted in funding being secured to develop a number of mountain bike routes and links between key cycle destinations. State of the Outback Report (2005) This report provides a comprehensive snapshot in time of the social, economic and environmental condition of South Australia’s outback areas. The report highlights a range of infrastructure and community capacity issues that need to be addressed in order to manage tourism growth in a sustainable manner. Department of Environment and Heritage (DEH) Planning Initiatives DEH is currently developing the Flinders Ranges Trail Master Plan to set the strategic direction for trails within the Flinders Ranges National Park. The plan will provide the directions for trail related experiences and trail sustainability. It will also provide future directions for trails within the park. OUR VISION AND TARGETS FOR SUSTAINABLE TOURISM We want more people to visit our region and we want them to experience the people, places and stories that make this a very special part of Australia. We want to be able to do that without damaging the natural environment and quality of life we currently enjoy. In fact, we see tourism as a long term investment in sustaining our land and its people. We want to provide high quality contemporary experiences that enable visitors to connect to this timeless land, its natural beauty, continuous culture and the “down to earth” people that call the Flinders Ranges and Outback South Australia their home. In summary our vision is to: Reward those who are drawn to experience our ancient, aweinspiring and diverse landscapes, and our rich living heritage with high quality products, services and infrastructure that supports their connections to our people and places and enables them to delight in an adventure they will always remember. Our central promise is that: We will reward our visitors with experiences that they will remember with delight. If everyone in the region lives this vision then we will succeed in attracting more people to visit, and in generating higher levels of expenditure from those who are already coming.
