Final Plan Develop a More Appealing Flinders Ranges and Outback SA of Tomorrow 7.3 Further Product Development Opportunities There are a range of existing products and experiences that can be further developed and enhanced to create a more appealing destination for visitors. Festivals and Events The region contributes to the State’s “Brilliant Blend of Events” with the Coober Pedy Opal Festival, Laura Folk Fair, Tastes of the Outback, Masters Games, and a broad range of locally organised and sponsored events including country music festivals, country shows, horse and camel races, rodeos, bronco branding, art exhibitions, gymkahanas, a mountain bike festival and multi-cultural celebrations. Some of these events are major drawcards for visitors seeking to connect with the outback or country lifestyle. Others are incidental discoveries enjoyed by people on their journey. While they may not have specifically sought them out, these events have added value to their trip. It is essential that Festivals and Events reflect the authentic character of the region and generate real returns for local communities. New events require a minimum of three years to become fully established so any funding or support should be continued for three years on a decreasing level of input over time. At the end of the three years no further subsidy should be given to events, unless they are delivering other tangible benefits to the community. Action Twenty Three: Support new events that reinforce the region’s key attributes and deliver real benefits to communities. The Opal Experience South Australian Opal Mining towns are internationally recognised, however there is a perception that they have not been actively promoted, in recent times, to the international market as destinations to include in their ‘must-do’ list. Coober Pedy has great character as a multicultural, spontaneous and eclectic town that offers something very different for visitors. It has enormous appeal to international visitors, high spending long distance tourers and young Australian excitement seekers. It has the range of accommodation, tours, entertainment and activities to cater for these markets. It has the capacity to accept higher numbers of travellers and to expand if the existing capacity is reached. It is a dynamic community with some of the region’s leading tourism operators and outstanding product. It would benefit from improved air access (see Action Twenty Nine) and increased holiday option packages related to the Ghan rail service (see Action Thirty One). Final Plan Develop a More Appealing Flinders Ranges and Outback SA of Tomorrow Action Twenty Four: Promote the best that Coober Pedy has to offer to our international and domestic target markets and enhance and expand existing products to provide outstanding experiences for those seeking opal, adventure and high quality service in a totally distinctive physical and cultural environment. Underground Coober Pedy Night Time Activities Most travellers are interested in some kind of night time activity, whether this be having a drink or a meal in a pub, listening to music or playing pool. Structured night time activities such as drinks at sunset, star gazing and astronomical interpretation tours, nocturnal animal tours, concerts, interactive sound and light shows, campfire storytelling, ten pin bowling, golf and other sports under lights and open air cinemas all have the potential to encourage visitors to stay an extra night and spend a few dollars more. Many people’s strongest memories are of the power of peace and quiet in a stunning setting. Lookouts over great scenery where the colours change as the sun sets and the moon rises provide opportunities for memorable experiences. The Mountains of Memory project partners have proposed a range of additional night time activities including: • A lookout and evening star gazing product at Hawker • A 3D Cinema at Arkaroola • A Sound and Light Show at the Blinman mine and an outdoor cinema at Parachilna. Action Twenty Five: Support the development and promotion of new night time activities as a chance to experience the clarity of our star filled night skies and our stunning sunsets and to meet the people who live and work in these places.
