Final Plan Develop a More Appealing Flinders Ranges and Outback SA of Tomorrow Huts on Heysen This product will be designed to appeal to older activity seekers and independent international travellers who are seeking a serviced overland walking track experience similar to that available in New Zealand and Tasmania. The idea would be to link existing tourist accommodation at Rawnsley Park, Wilpena and Angorichina Village or Parachilna with 5 to 7 low impact huts providing beds, fireplace, cooking facilities, composting toilets and water supported by services including provision of bedding, prepared meals and wine, and luggage transfer. It is anticipated that this market will be self drive or on an organised small vehicle tour, travelling as singles, couples and in groups of up to six people. The Huts on Heysen product would need to be managed through bookings according to hut capacity. This product should ideally be located within the Flinders Ranges National Park which will require the establishment of an appropriate lease or partnership arrangement for the construction and ongoing management of the Huts as a high yield tourism venture. See Map 2 on page 52 for a proposed route for this walk that capitalises on existing accommodation and attractive walking environments with some facilities already available. It should be noted that this is very much a preliminary concept that should not be seen as pre-empting the feasibility study that will be undertaken by DEH in the 2008/09 budget period. This feasibility study may result in changes to the alignment of the Heysen Trail and a completely different approach than that indicated in Map Two and the proposed itinerary on the following pages. If a suitable mechanism is unable to be put in place to enable this development in the National Park then this product could be developed on adjacent pastoral properties, subject to overcoming the pastoral tourism issues identified earlier in this Plan. However, Huts Near Heysen does not have the same market appeal as Huts On Heysen. Action Twenty Two: Investigate the feasibility of serviced huts that would support a high yield bushwalking experience on or near the Heysen Trail. Explore a range of delivery mechanisms that would facilitate a public/private partnership that would satisfy conservation and community objectives. Moralana Scenic Drive – First Hut at the start of the walk Walkers dropped off by Tour Operators First Day Moralana Scenic Drive to Hills Homestead or Wilpena Pound Resort (11- 14km depending on option selected) Walk following the Bunbinyunna Creek through a gorge, with a steep climb into Black Gap and a further steep climb, after leaving Arkaba Station, through Bridle Gap and across the relatively flat terrain of Wilpena Pound to the Hills Homestead. Second Day Either stay at Second Hut or continue to Wilpena Pound Resort. Second Hut at the Hills Homestead as an overnight stop for those wishing to climb St Mary Peak the next day (14.6km return or 21.5km loop) Alternatively on Day One continue to Wilpena Pound Resort – approximately 3km. Third Day For those staying at the Wilpena Pound resort the first night, the second day will involve following Wilpena Creek, along a sparse ridge and then along the valley of Wilcolo Creek for about 8 kilometres. Your day will end at the Third Hut near the Wilcolo Creek crossing where it is relatively flat. Wilcolo Creek crossing to Yanyanna Hut (approximately 11km) You will start by heading through a gap in the ABC range climbing steeply before meeting the Bunyeroo and Wilcolo Creek Hike Walking Trail. After crossing Bunyeroo Creek the trail traverses a scrub filled gully and climbs over a barren ridge to Yanyanna Hut. Fourth Day Stay tonight in the Fourth Hut adjacent to Bunyeroo Spring and Yanyanna Hut. Yanyanna Hut to Middlesight Water (approximately 8km) From Fourth Hut it is relatively easy to walk to Fifth Hut at Middlesight Water. Fifth Day For those who wish to add to their walk the Trezona Hike is a 7.8km loop commencing at the Elatina Hut ruins and passing through the Yoongoona waterhole and returning to the hut at Middlesight Water. Middlesight Water to Aroona (approximately 12km) This leg is steady going with some of the best scenery and opportunities to see wildlife in their natural habitat in the Flinders Ranges. The Sixth Hut at Aroona is adjacent to a DEH campsite with toilets and water and next to the partially restored Aroona Homestead, the place where Hans Heysen commenced his lifelong love of the area in 1927.
