Final Plan Infrastructure and Services that Support Positive Visitor Experiences Signage There are always concerns expressed about the quality, number, location and functionality of signs from a tourism perspective. One of the great successes in alerting people to a town’s key attributes is considered to be the large brown signs in the Southern Flinders Ranges which are located at the entry to all towns. Other specific areas need signage and interpretation to improve safety and access. Blinman Pools is an example of a walking track that is heavily promoted but poorly signposted and maintained. Entrances to towns can also do a lot to attract or repel visitors. Places like Port Augusta, Blinman and Mungerannie are actively working to improve entrances to create a sense of welcome. Roads Most communities spoke of the need to maintain dirt roads in reasonable condition for safety reasons. Particular mention was made of the tyre damage caused in the gorges of the Flinders Ranges and on the Strezlecki Track. The Public Access Route to Lake Eyre and some of the routes that provide access to points of interest off the Oodnadatta Track and the Stuart Highway (eg Art Centre at Indulkana) were noted as being in particularly poor condition. Public Access Routes pose a difficult dilemma as they are the responsibility of the Pastoral Board which has no resources available to maintain them. Consideration will need to be given to the desirability of promoting these if access conditions have deteriorated through lack of maintenance. Alternatively resources would need to be found to fund the regular maintenance of Public Access Routes. DTEI has overall responsibility for the maintenance of roads in the Flinders Ranges and Outback SA, out of Council areas and so will need to work closely with the SATC and regional communities to identify and prioritise roadworks that support tourism. Final Plan Infrastructure and Services that Support Positive Visitor Experiences Action Thirty Four: Investigate the potential to establish a shared approach to maintaining Public Access Routes (PARs) between the State Transport Department (DTEI), the Pastoral Board and pastoral property lessees. Action Thirty Five: Identify priority infrastructure improvements required to support tourism growth and lobby for the resources to progress these improvements. Action Thirty Six: Identify and support opportunities to introduce alternative technologies for energy and water supply. Action Thirty Seven: Review the existing provision of Visitor Information Services across the region to establish a well resourced network of centres and outlets.
