Communities
There is growing recognition of the critical
role that gender plays in the social dynamics
of local communities. These social dynamics
can impact on the quality and effectiveness
of community engagement programmes and
the legacy of Rio Tinto’s operations. Greater
attention to the gender aspects of our work will
help increase our capacity to gain and maintain
a social licence to operate; to improve the
quality of life and socio-economic conditions of
impacted and affected women and men in the
communities; to increase local and Indigenous
employment opportunities; to uphold our
commitments to human rights; to minimise
the negative impacts of our operations; and
generally to advance Rio Tinto’s sustainable
development objectives.
