Introduction<br />

Rio T<strong>in</strong>to is committed to<br />

<strong>in</strong>clusiveness and equality<br />

across all societal groups<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g ethnic m<strong>in</strong>orities,<br />

Indigenous peoples, migrants,<br />

landless people, HIV <strong>in</strong>fected<br />

and all other vulnerable or<br />

marg<strong>in</strong>alised groups. The practical<br />

management implications<br />

concern<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>clusiveness and<br />

<strong>gender</strong> <strong>in</strong>tegration raised <strong>in</strong> this<br />

guide will be applicable to all<br />

these groups.<br />

Respond<strong>in</strong>g to the diversity of<br />

our stakeholders and <strong>in</strong>tegrat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>gender</strong> considerations <strong>in</strong>to our<br />

Communities work is critical. We<br />

need to ensure that the benefits<br />

of our <strong>in</strong>vestments <strong>in</strong> the different<br />

countries <strong>in</strong> which we operate<br />

are accessible to the full spectrum<br />

of community. This means<br />

women and men, girls and boys<br />

must benefit, <strong>in</strong> particular, the<br />

most vulnerable. We must also<br />

ensure that decisions regard<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the manner and nature of our<br />

contribution to economic, social<br />

and <strong>in</strong>frastructure developments<br />

consider the desires of all groups <strong>in</strong><br />

the local community – recognis<strong>in</strong>g<br />

that there may be a large diversity<br />

of views and concerns among<br />

women and men.<br />

With its practical orientation,<br />

we hope that this guide will be<br />

a useful reference <strong>for</strong> Rio T<strong>in</strong>to’s<br />

Communities practitioners, and<br />

<strong>for</strong> educat<strong>in</strong>g our bus<strong>in</strong>esses<br />

more broadly. It is relevant <strong>for</strong><br />

employees at various levels<br />

– from operations through to<br />

specialist areas, such as Human<br />

Resources and Procurement,<br />

to better <strong>in</strong>corporate <strong>gender</strong><br />

considerations <strong>in</strong>to their plann<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and programm<strong>in</strong>g. As the guide<br />

is applicable <strong>for</strong> all projects and<br />

sites <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g exploration, m<strong>in</strong>es<br />

and smelters, it will help enrich<br />

diversity across Rio T<strong>in</strong>to.<br />
