Case study 11<br />

The flexible work practices<br />

strategy is one of several<br />

work<strong>for</strong>ce diversity <strong>in</strong>itiatives<br />

that <strong>for</strong>med part of the Kennecott<br />

strategic plan <strong>for</strong> 2006. These<br />

<strong>in</strong>itiatives align with Rio T<strong>in</strong>to’s<br />

overall diversity goals.<br />

Kennecott also developed<br />

annual diversity targets as part<br />

of the organisational Human<br />

Resources Plan beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> 2006.<br />

Kennecott outper<strong>for</strong>med aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />

the <strong>gender</strong> targets <strong>in</strong> the first year<br />

but did not meet its targets <strong>in</strong> the<br />

second year. The ethnic diversity<br />

target was not achieved <strong>in</strong> the<br />

first year but was exceeded <strong>in</strong> the<br />

second year.<br />

It became apparent that simply<br />

through more focus on improv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the specific elements of the<br />

diversity profile <strong>in</strong> the bus<strong>in</strong>ess,<br />

improvements could be made.<br />

However, challenges rema<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />

susta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g these improvements,<br />

which is the justification <strong>for</strong> the<br />

<strong>in</strong>troduction of more flexible<br />

work practices such as job<br />

shar<strong>in</strong>g, telecommut<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

flex-schedul<strong>in</strong>g. The impact of<br />

these practices will be measured<br />

as part of the pilot project, as well<br />

as the feasibility of extend<strong>in</strong>g<br />

some of these practices to the<br />

more challeng<strong>in</strong>g operation<br />

environments at Kennecott.<br />

Additional focus is also be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

placed on the content and<br />

placement of job post<strong>in</strong>gs to<br />

appeal to and attract diverse<br />

candidates. 11<br />
