– <strong>gender</strong> equality and equity; and<br />

<strong>for</strong> why Rio T<strong>in</strong>to seeks to ensure<br />
a strong focus on <strong>gender</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />

will help the company <strong>in</strong>crease its<br />

Section 3 – The <strong>gender</strong>ed nature<br />
of m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g impacts and benefits<br />
We know that the effects of<br />
m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g are experienced <strong>in</strong> a<br />
variety of ways, depend<strong>in</strong>g on a<br />
person’s <strong>gender</strong>, ethnicity, age,<br />
class and a range of other factors.<br />
This section outl<strong>in</strong>es some of these<br />
impacts, with a particular focus<br />
on women, along the follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />
thematic l<strong>in</strong>es:<br />
– negotiation and engagement;<br />
– local employment;<br />
– socio-economic and<br />
environmental aspects; and<br />
– special issues: resettlement<br />
and displacement, HIV and<br />

Section 4 – International protocols<br />
<strong>for</strong> <strong>gender</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>stream<strong>in</strong>g<br />
There are numerous <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />
agreements, <strong>in</strong>itiatives and<br />
policies that have helped frame the<br />
<strong>gender</strong> and development debate.<br />
These frameworks have emerged<br />
over many years of concerted<br />
<strong>in</strong>ternational and local activism<br />
seek<strong>in</strong>g to improve the rights of<br />
women and br<strong>in</strong>g the need <strong>for</strong><br />
<strong>gender</strong> equality to the <strong>for</strong>efront of<br />
the development agenda. These<br />
frameworks embody the pr<strong>in</strong>ciples<br />
of <strong>gender</strong> equality agreed upon<br />
by the <strong>in</strong>ternational community.<br />

to the <strong>in</strong>ternational discourse on<br />
