There are numerous <strong>in</strong>ternational agreements, <strong>in</strong>itiatives and policies that frame<br />

the <strong>gender</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>stream<strong>in</strong>g debate. These frameworks have been developed from<br />

many years of concerted local and <strong>in</strong>ternational activism seek<strong>in</strong>g to improve the<br />

rights of women and br<strong>in</strong>g the need <strong>for</strong> <strong>gender</strong> equality to the <strong>for</strong>efront of the<br />

development agenda.<br />
