SPORTING GOODS<br />
Retail sales of sport<strong>in</strong>g goods <strong>in</strong> the US were valued at<br />
approximately 24 billion US dollars <strong>in</strong> 1993. Cloth<strong>in</strong>g<br />
accounted for 53% (12.8 billion US dollars), while<br />
footwear <strong>and</strong> sport<strong>in</strong>g equipment each comprised about<br />
23% (5.6 billion <strong>and</strong> 5.5 billion US dollars, respectively).<br />
By 1988, the value of retail sales of sport<strong>in</strong>g goods is<br />
expected to rise to 29 billion US dollars, reflect<strong>in</strong>g 4%<br />
average annual growth. Details are given of the US sports<br />

OPPORTUNITIES FOR FIBRES<br />
A new coat<strong>in</strong>g facility from Inco Europe is described, <strong>in</strong><br />
which carbon fibres are coated with nickel. The coated<br />
fibres called VaporFab can be <strong>in</strong>corporated <strong>in</strong>to a product<br />
<strong>in</strong> the normal way via weav<strong>in</strong>g, chopp<strong>in</strong>g, blend<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />
mould<strong>in</strong>g, to provide EMI/RFI shield<strong>in</strong>g for a number of<br />
electrical <strong>and</strong> electronic devices. In addition, the fibres<br />
are be<strong>in</strong>g used <strong>in</strong> the leisure <strong>in</strong>dustry, where their light<br />
weight, strength <strong>and</strong> attractive appearance is be<strong>in</strong>g<br />
exploited <strong>in</strong> the shafts of golf clubs, fish<strong>in</strong>g rods <strong>and</strong> tennis<br />
