its volume, weight <strong>and</strong> price. The entire backboard,<br />

support system <strong>and</strong> base are rotomoulded from UV-treated<br />

LLDPE to elim<strong>in</strong>ate the potential for rust <strong>and</strong> crack<strong>in</strong>g<br />

caused by sunlight, while ensur<strong>in</strong>g longevity under severe,<br />

Scott Bader has supplied materials for the manufacture<br />

of the re<strong>in</strong>forced plastic bodies of TVR sports cars for<br />

more than 20 years <strong>and</strong> the two companies have formed<br />

a close partnership. All mould<strong>in</strong>gs are produced us<strong>in</strong>g<br />

h<strong>and</strong> lay-up techniques. Scott Bader’s development of a<br />

fully s<strong>and</strong>able gel coat provided TVR with a product<br />

ideally suited to its process<strong>in</strong>g needs. The Crystic res<strong>in</strong><br />

used to produce bodies, doors, bonnets <strong>and</strong> boot lids has<br />

cure characteristics designed to achieve stability rapidly,<br />

thus prevent<strong>in</strong>g distortion.<br />

High performance fibre re<strong>in</strong>forced polymeric<br />

composite materials provide various advantageous such<br />

as high strength, high modulus, light weight,<br />

dimensional stability <strong>and</strong> weather resistance, <strong>and</strong> the<br />

polymeric composites are widely used <strong>in</strong> aerospace,<br />

electronics, automotive <strong>and</strong> sports goods <strong>in</strong>dustries.<br />

Wholly aromatic copolyester liquid crystal polymer<br />

(LCP) fibres have attractive properties such as high<br />

modulus, high strength, excellent impact absorption,<br />

solvent resistance <strong>and</strong> reasonable process<strong>in</strong>g<br />

temperature. Polyimides (PIs) are thermo-oxidatively<br />

<strong>and</strong> dimensionally stable <strong>and</strong> reta<strong>in</strong> high mechanical<br />

strength at temperatures beyond the degradation of<br />

many other polymers. Short LCP fibre-re<strong>in</strong>forced<br />

polyimide composite materials have been studied.<br />

However, they cannot provide excellent mechanical<br />

properties caused by breakage of matrix polymer at<br />

the fibre crossover po<strong>in</strong>ts. LCP fabric, rather than short<br />

fibre, is applied to the polymeric composite system <strong>in</strong><br />

order to exert maximum strength of the LCP fibre<br />

without breakage at the fibre crossover po<strong>in</strong>ts. The<br />

physical properties of composite materials are<br />

dom<strong>in</strong>ated by adhesion between <strong>in</strong>terface of the<br />

re<strong>in</strong>forcement <strong>and</strong> matrix polymer. The LCP fabric has<br />

poor adhesion to polyimide; such poor adhesion<br />

between them is a major problem for production of high<br />

strength <strong>and</strong> high temperature composite materials.<br />

Emphasis is placed on the improvement of surface<br />

adhesion. 4 refs.<br />
