Plastics are used <strong>in</strong> many different sports <strong>and</strong> leisure<br />

applications, from cloth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> camp<strong>in</strong>g gear to tennis<br />

racquets <strong>and</strong> golf clubs. PUs <strong>and</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g plastics<br />

made up 58% of the 39,000 tonnes of advanced materials<br />

used <strong>in</strong> North America <strong>in</strong> 1997. It is forecast that<br />

consumption of plastics <strong>in</strong> this sector, which refers ma<strong>in</strong>ly<br />

to golf, ski<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> tennis, will fall slightly <strong>in</strong> the com<strong>in</strong>g<br />

years, reach<strong>in</strong>g 22,300 tonnes <strong>in</strong> 2002.<br />

In the field of high performance sports equipment<br />

struggl<strong>in</strong>g with competition is just as hard as <strong>in</strong> sport itself.<br />

Grow<strong>in</strong>g challenges for global competition on the other<br />

sports equipment which can only be achieved through<br />

THERMOPLASTIC ELASTOMERS ARE<br />

EVERYWHERE<br />

A special thermoplastic elastomer film is be<strong>in</strong>g used to<br />

make the bladder of all NFL footballs <strong>and</strong> every football<br />

produced by Wilson <strong>Sport</strong><strong>in</strong>g Goods. The TPU film is<br />

supplied by Deerfield Urethane. Another TPU, provided<br />

by Stevens Urethane, is used <strong>in</strong> an air bladder system for<br />

antivibration gloves. Gillette’s Mach 3 razor has a softgrip<br />

h<strong>and</strong>le provided by a custom-blended TPE developed<br />

by GLS. Advanced Elastomer Systems’ Santoprene 8000,<br />

a colourable, soft-touch TPE, is specified by ACCO<br />

Br<strong>and</strong>s for its Sw<strong>in</strong>gl<strong>in</strong>e Contura l<strong>in</strong>e of staplers.<br />

RUBBER BRICKS GIVE SPRUCE MEADOWS A<br />

LEG UP<br />

In the arena of professional jump<strong>in</strong>g competition, the<br />

stakes are high <strong>and</strong> the risks are great for both horse <strong>and</strong><br />

rider. In order to cont<strong>in</strong>ue attract<strong>in</strong>g the world’s best horse<br />

jumpers, Spruce Meadows, located south cast of Calgary,<br />

is constantly search<strong>in</strong>g for new ways to improve the safety<br />

of horses that compete there. To reduce the risk of horses<br />

slipp<strong>in</strong>g on their way <strong>in</strong>to competition, the facility needed<br />

to f<strong>in</strong>d a safer material to surface walkways <strong>and</strong> entrances<br />

to arenas. Spruce Meadows has partnered with the Tire<br />

Recycl<strong>in</strong>g Management Association of Alberta (TRMA)<br />

to <strong>in</strong>stall <strong>in</strong>terlock<strong>in</strong>g rubber bricks manufactured from<br />

Alberta’s scrap tyres. Details are given.<br />
