ELASTOMERS AND POLYURETHANES FOR<br />
FOOTWEAR<br />
A review is presented of the materials <strong>and</strong> mach<strong>in</strong>ery<br />
exhibited at Simac 98 for use <strong>in</strong> the production of<br />
footwear. In particular, the use of polyurethanes is<br />
described, <strong>and</strong> details are also given of the use of<br />
polyolef<strong>in</strong> elastomers <strong>in</strong> footwear foams, <strong>in</strong>dustrial <strong>and</strong><br />
outdoor boots <strong>and</strong> casual <strong>and</strong> sports shoes, where these<br />
materials are claimed to offer the highest process<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />

BRIGHTER SIDE OF RECYCLING<br />
Examples of products made from recycled plastics are<br />
reviewed. In addition to the products made<br />
traditionally from recycled materials, such as park<br />
benches <strong>and</strong> noise <strong>in</strong>sulation walls, attention is also<br />
directed at ra<strong>in</strong> water collectors made from<br />
polyethylene recyclate, the AEG vacuum cleaner<br />
made from 40% recycled plastic, gymnasium <strong>and</strong><br />
sports mats made from recycled rubber <strong>and</strong> plastic,<br />
<strong>and</strong> refuse conta<strong>in</strong>ers made from recycled PE. Articles<br />

The performance of Goodyear’s Eagle F1 GS Fiorano is<br />
reviewed as it was used on the Ferrari F 50. The<br />
cooperation with Ferrari is discussed regard<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
development of this tyre <strong>and</strong> fitt<strong>in</strong>g it to high-performance<br />
sports cars as they come off the assembly l<strong>in</strong>e. The results<br />
of tests <strong>in</strong> Fiorano are exam<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g details of<br />
performance on the track, traction, directional stability,<br />
h<strong>and</strong>l<strong>in</strong>g, tread pattern <strong>and</strong> acceleration. Other aspects<br />
discussed cover high speed <strong>and</strong> grip as well as the<br />
technology transfer from Formula 1 to the development<br />
of tyres for the road.<br />
