Montebelluna, Italy, is the capital of the world’s ski<br />
boot manufactur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry <strong>and</strong> is home to the<br />
<strong>in</strong>jection mould<strong>in</strong>g mach<strong>in</strong>ery maker Oima. Oima has<br />
a large market share of ski boot manufactur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
equipment sales, with over 80% of the world’s ski boots<br />
be<strong>in</strong>g made on its mach<strong>in</strong>es. The major material used<br />
<strong>in</strong> the manufacture of ski boots is thermoplastic PU.<br />
Oima has recently ga<strong>in</strong>ed a relatively new competitor<br />
<strong>in</strong> this niche market <strong>in</strong> the form of Nuova Plastic Metal,<br />
another Italian mach<strong>in</strong>ery maker situated near<br />
Montebelluna.<br />

LOTUS - PAST AND PRESENT<br />

The late Col<strong>in</strong> Chapman, who founded Lotus Cars 44<br />
years ago, was a pioneer <strong>in</strong> the use of automotive plastics.<br />
At the present day Lotus factory they now build the Esprit<br />
<strong>and</strong> the Elise. The Elise chassis is a spaceframe structure<br />
of epoxy-bonded sections of alum<strong>in</strong>ium extrusions <strong>and</strong><br />
the Esprit has a rigid z<strong>in</strong>c coat steel backbone. All the<br />
external panels on both models are composite GRP with<br />
some carbon/Kevlar structural re<strong>in</strong>forc<strong>in</strong>g. The Elise<br />
weighs only 690kg.<br />

The requirements of the sports shoe <strong>in</strong>dustry <strong>in</strong> terms of<br />
rubber compounds <strong>and</strong> the development of new<br />
compounds is discussed, <strong>in</strong> order that the <strong>in</strong>dustry may<br />
comply with the <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g dem<strong>and</strong>s from consumers for<br />
performance footwear. The key requirements are<br />
durability <strong>and</strong> traction, but other requirements are<br />
considered with reference to the various sport<strong>in</strong>g activities<br />
for which such footwear is worn. The <strong>in</strong>dustry is compared<br />
with the tyre <strong>in</strong>dustry, which has been seen to dom<strong>in</strong>ate<br />
the development of new rubber compounds, <strong>and</strong> it is<br />
suggested that the footwear <strong>in</strong>dustry may be the future<br />
leader <strong>in</strong> new polymer development.<br />

which is a new generation of high-performance,<br />
lightweight tour<strong>in</strong>g b<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g, which <strong>in</strong>corporates many<br />
parts made <strong>in</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g polymers. The position of the<br />
boot on the ski can be set at four different angles for<br />
climb<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> a fifth one for descent.<br />
