PART 3: SECTION 13.2 LPS 1254 TANKS 1) The BS 5306 LPC Rules for Automatic Sprinkler Installations identifies the following types of pump suction tanks: Note: This specification is withdrawn for all contracts delivered after 1 st April 2009. Type A Not dependent on inflow, fed from a potable water supply, and suitable for sprinkler service without emptying, cleaning, maintenance or repair for a period of not less than 15 years. Type B Not dependent on inflow. Type C Dependent on inflow. Type D Dependent on inflow, fed from a potable water supply, and suitable for sprinkler service without emptying, cleaning, maintenance or repair for a period of not less than 15 years. The type of tank approved or certificated is indicated by capital the letter A. B, C or D at the end of the LPCB Reference number in the product listing. 2) Each single-supply or multi-level take-off tank supplied under this approval scheme must not exceed a maximum capacity of 1300m 3 . Duplicate sub-divided tanks may have a total capacity not exceeding 2600m 3 , provided the dividing wall is structurally capable of supporting either compartment full whilst the other is empty, and the maximum capacity of each compartment does not exceed 1300m 3 3) Continuation of approval is conditional upon a current Regulations Advisory Scheme, WRAS certificate (formerly WrC) being held by the manufacturer, specific to each tank listed. 4) 1,2 Galvanised steel tanks Type A and D shall have the tank shell protected by: (a) a coating weight of at least 610g/m 2 each side, with such tank entries marked ‘g’, or (b) an equivalent corrosion protection system which has been specifically approved and listed by the LPCB, with such tank entries marked ‘e’. 5) 1 Galvanised steel tanks Types B and C shall have the tank shell protected by a coating weight of at least 300g/m 2 each side, or an equivalent corrosion protection system, approved and listed by the LPCB. 6) The purchaser shall specify the required tank designation A, B, C or D in accordance with the LPC Rules for Automatic Sprinkler Installations, together with the tank reference number. 7) The tank must bear a plate stating: (i) The name and address of the manufacturer. (ii) The date of installation. (iii) The LPCB Reference Number, including the type suffix (A,B,C or D) which has been specified by the purchaser and agreed by the manufacturer. (iv) The maximum capacity in cubic metres. Multi-supply tanks must indicate the capacity for the automatic sprinkler system separately. Tanks which do not bear such a plate are not approved. 8) Specifiers of LPCB approved sprinkler suction tanks are advised to ensure that where a vortex inhibitor is used in accordance with the LPC Sprinkler Rules, that the vortex inhibitor used is listed in Part 5 Section 14 of the Red Book as LPCB approved. Note 1. Corrosion protection systems specified should be regarded as minimum levels and additional protection may be warranted in special circumstances to achieve a design life of at least 15 years (Types A & D) or 6 years (Types B & C). 18 Jan 2014 133
