with <strong>the</strong>m and must present it<br />

if requested <strong>to</strong> do so by a<br />

<strong>Lawrence</strong> Tech Campus Safety<br />

CAREER SERVICES<br />

Career Services is much more<br />

than a place where students<br />

can go <strong>to</strong> find a job when <strong>the</strong>y<br />

graduate. Career Services provides<br />

a wide variety of services<br />

and programs that, as early<br />

as <strong>the</strong> freshman year, can help<br />

students develop <strong>the</strong>ir career<br />

plans and establish career<br />

goals by identifying <strong>the</strong>ir abilities,<br />

values, and interests, and<br />

<strong>the</strong>n targeting occupations that<br />

reflect those same abilities,<br />

values, and interests. The<br />

office can also help students<br />

gain experience in <strong>the</strong>ir chosen<br />

field.<br />

Services include career<br />

advising, on-campus employment,<br />

cooperative education<br />

and internships, career workshops,<br />

resume critiques, mock<br />

inter<strong>view</strong>s, career fairs,<br />

employer presentations, and<br />

on-campus inter<strong>view</strong>s. Career<br />

Services is also responsible for<br />

<strong>the</strong> Career Center section of<br />

Tech Net<br />

(www.lawrencetech.net), <strong>the</strong><br />

University’s web-based information<br />

system. Students may<br />

post <strong>the</strong>ir resumes for <strong>view</strong>ing<br />

by prospective employers and<br />

can also <strong>view</strong> job postings.<br />

The Office of Career<br />

Services is located in M130,<br />

Buell Management Building,<br />

and is open daily 8 a.m.-4:30<br />

p.m.; with extended hours<br />

(until 7 p.m.) Monday-<br />

Wednesday during fall and<br />

spring semesters. The office<br />

moves <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Taubman Center<br />

early in 2006.<br />

COMPUTER RESOURCES<br />

<strong>Lawrence</strong> Tech has taken<br />

aggressive steps <strong>to</strong> create a<br />

technological environment<br />

which assures that students are<br />

well prepared and positioned<br />

<strong>to</strong> take full advantage of<br />

advanced learning opportunities,<br />

greater access <strong>to</strong> educational<br />

resources, and ultimately,<br />

achieve a competitive edge<br />

in <strong>the</strong> workplace. <strong>Lawrence</strong><br />

Tech’s extensive computer<br />

resources help students as <strong>the</strong>y<br />

learn, retain, analyze, present,<br />

use, and exchange complex<br />

technological and graphical<br />

information.<br />

The University’s wireless<br />

lap<strong>to</strong>p computer initiative provides<br />

all undergraduates with a<br />

state-of-<strong>the</strong>-art notebook computer<br />

cus<strong>to</strong>mized <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir academic<br />

discipline with <strong>the</strong> latest<br />

releases of professional software.<br />

All registered students at<br />

<strong>Lawrence</strong> Tech receive a free<br />

computer account that includes<br />

access <strong>to</strong> email, Internet2, and<br />

protected s<strong>to</strong>rage on <strong>the</strong><br />

University’s servers.<br />

Students, faculty, and staff<br />

can access <strong>the</strong>ir account from<br />

any campus terminal, personal<br />

computer, or lap<strong>to</strong>p. Students,<br />

faculty, and staff are expected<br />

<strong>to</strong> obtain Internet service if<br />

<strong>the</strong>y wish <strong>to</strong> access <strong>the</strong><br />

system from off-campus.<br />

The University no longer provides<br />

modem-based access <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> system. Additional information<br />

is available at<br />

www.ltu.edu/computercenter.<br />

The Southfield campus has<br />

wireless coverage using<br />

802.11b technology. Users<br />

should set <strong>the</strong>ir ESSID <strong>to</strong><br />

“LTU Wireless Network” <strong>to</strong><br />

connect. This service is provided<br />

in all central campus<br />

buildings and <strong>the</strong> residence<br />

halls. Public printers are provided<br />

in <strong>the</strong> Computer<br />

Labora<strong>to</strong>ry in S115. Additional<br />

public printers are located in<br />

University Housing South and<br />

North and in <strong>the</strong> library. The<br />

Computer Lab is open<br />

Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-8 p.m.<br />

At <strong>the</strong> end of each term, hours<br />

are extended until 10 p.m.,<br />

Monday-Thursday.<br />

The Lap<strong>to</strong>p Support<br />

HelpDesk provides walk-in<br />

support for student computer<br />

problems. It is located in<br />

T215, and staffed 7:30 a.m.-<br />

7:30 p.m., Monday-Thursday,<br />

and 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Fridays.<br />

Telephone support is also provided<br />

during <strong>the</strong>se hours at<br />

248.204.2330. The HelpDesk<br />

moves <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Taubman Center<br />

early in 2006.<br />

My.ltu.edu – <strong>Lawrence</strong> Tech’s<br />

comprehensive e-learning and<br />

services portal, my.ltu.edu,<br />

offers an expanding variety of<br />

resources and conveniences.<br />

Among <strong>the</strong>m is Blackboard, a<br />

comprehensive and flexible e-<br />

learning software platform that<br />

delivers <strong>the</strong> University’s<br />

course management system,<br />

cus<strong>to</strong>mized institution-wide<br />

portals, on line communities,<br />

and an advanced architecture<br />

that provides for Web-based<br />

integration with <strong>the</strong><br />

University’s administrative<br />

systems.<br />

The University’s course<br />

management system offers students<br />

<strong>the</strong> 24 hour/7 day per<br />

week access <strong>to</strong> professors and<br />

fellow students not available in<br />

<strong>the</strong> typical classroom environment.<br />

Professors can post <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

syllabi online, as well as class<br />

lectures and assignments for<br />

immediate retrieval anytime,<br />

anywhere. O<strong>the</strong>r features<br />

available through Blackboard<br />

are discussion boards for posting<br />

questions and receiving<br />

answers <strong>to</strong> and from o<strong>the</strong>r students<br />

and <strong>the</strong> professor in <strong>the</strong><br />

class, Virtual Chat Room capabilities<br />

for asynchronous communication<br />

with <strong>the</strong> entire<br />

class, and <strong>the</strong> Digital Drop<br />

Box, which enables students <strong>to</strong><br />

send assignments <strong>to</strong> professors<br />

on-line.<br />

Registering for classes,<br />

inquiries about account balances<br />

and financial aid disbursements,<br />

internal and external<br />

job searches, payment of<br />

balances, and access <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

library databases are among<br />

<strong>the</strong> large number of <strong>the</strong> additional<br />
