Deadlines – To obtain a<br />

tuition grant for <strong>the</strong> semester<br />

beginning in <strong>the</strong> fall, students<br />

should fill out <strong>the</strong> FAFSA and<br />

return it for processing in early<br />

spring. The final deadline is<br />

July 15. Students are encouraged<br />

<strong>to</strong> file early in order <strong>to</strong><br />

know <strong>the</strong>ir financial aid status<br />

well in advance of <strong>the</strong> fall<br />

semester.<br />

All students should complete<br />

<strong>the</strong> FAFSA prior <strong>to</strong><br />

March 1st for Michigan<br />

Competitive Scholarship consideration.<br />

Helping both new students<br />

and upperclassmen<br />

with <strong>the</strong>ir financial<br />

planning is <strong>the</strong> role of<br />

<strong>Lawrence</strong> Tech’s Office of<br />

Financial Aid. Approximately<br />

two-thirds of <strong>the</strong> University’s<br />

students receive financial<br />

assistance. Financial assistance<br />

<strong>to</strong>tals more than $25 million<br />

annually – $10 million in outright<br />

grants and scholarships,<br />

and $15 million in low-interest<br />

loans.<br />

Through various private,<br />

state, and federal programs,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Office of Financial Aid<br />

offers aid <strong>to</strong> some 3,000 students.<br />

Good students should<br />

not be dissuaded from pursuing<br />

a quality <strong>Lawrence</strong> Tech<br />

education because <strong>the</strong>y assume<br />

it is beyond <strong>the</strong>ir means.<br />

STATE TUITION GRANTS AND<br />

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR<br />

MICHIGAN RESIDENTS<br />

<strong>Lawrence</strong> Tech students in<br />

need of financial aid have a<br />

special opportunity for assistance<br />

through <strong>the</strong> State of<br />

Michigan Tuition Grant program,<br />

which is exclusively for<br />

students attending Michigan<br />

independent colleges.<br />

<strong>Lawrence</strong> Tech students may<br />

receive outright grants of $100<br />

<strong>to</strong> $2,000 <strong>to</strong>ward yearly tuition<br />

throughout <strong>the</strong>ir undergraduate<br />

college careers, <strong>the</strong> amount<br />

depending upon need and<br />

availability of funds.<br />

The state also has a scholarship<br />

program, <strong>the</strong> Michigan<br />

Competitive Scholarship, for<br />

students enrolled in public or<br />

private Michigan colleges.<br />

Michigan Competitive<br />

Scholarships are awarded on<br />

<strong>the</strong> basis of <strong>the</strong> American<br />

College Test (ACT) and<br />

demonstrated financial need.<br />

<strong>Lawrence</strong> Tech students are<br />

also eligible for state scholarships<br />

if <strong>the</strong>y are Michigan residents.<br />

Last year more than<br />

1,500 students received<br />

Michigan scholarships or<br />

tuition grants.<br />

Requirements – To qualify<br />

for a Michigan tuition grant or<br />

scholarship, an applicant must<br />

be a U.S. citizen or have<br />

declared his or her intention of<br />

becoming a citizen; must have<br />

been a continuous Michigan<br />

resident since July 1 (last<br />

year); and must be student<br />

attending at least half-time<br />

(minimum of 6 hours).<br />

How <strong>to</strong> Apply – To apply, a<br />

student should complete a Free<br />

Application for Federal<br />

Student Aid (FAFSA), reading<br />

OTHER MICHIGAN PROGRAMS<br />

Michigan Adult Part-Time<br />

Grant -- Eligible students must<br />

be self-supporting and independent,<br />

taking between 3 and<br />

11 credit hours, and qualify for<br />

ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> Pell Grant or State<br />

of Michigan Tuition Grant.<br />

Students must also be making<br />

satisfac<strong>to</strong>ry academic progress<br />

and have been a Michigan resident<br />

for <strong>the</strong> past 12 months.<br />

Awards range from $100 <strong>to</strong><br />

$600 per year.<br />

Michigan Work Study – This<br />

program is designed <strong>to</strong> help<br />

students pay for <strong>the</strong>ir education<br />

by providing <strong>the</strong>m with<br />

employment. Students may<br />

work on campus in any capacity,<br />

including work in academic<br />

departments and administrative<br />

offices as well as library<br />

work, landscaping, and maintenance<br />

work. A student must<br />
