of three-dimensional solid<br />

From Vitruvius <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> present,<br />

architects have recorded <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

ideas about design and building. A<br />

focus on texts written by architects.<br />

Participants discuss <strong>the</strong> writers’<br />

ideas and work in relation <strong>to</strong><br />

its his<strong>to</strong>rical context. Readings<br />

drawn from <strong>the</strong> work of Vitruvius,<br />

Alberti, Palladio, Laugier,<br />

Sullivan, Loos, LeCorbusier, Aldo<br />

Rossi, Robert Venturi, Daniel<br />

Libeskin, Rem Koolhass and o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

writers. Weekly reading assignments,<br />

a research paper, lectures,<br />

ARC4114 ARCHITECTURAL<br />

DESIGN STUDIO 5<br />

Prerequisites: ARC3126,<br />

ARC2323, ARC3523. An integral<br />

architectural endeavor that syn<strong>the</strong>sizes<br />

and builds upon <strong>the</strong> various<br />

design experiences of <strong>the</strong> previous<br />

years. Collective issues are integrated,<br />

including: programming,<br />

environmental concerns, structure,<br />

and building systems. Clarity of<br />

thought and sensitivity of design<br />

are explored in design proposal<br />

format through <strong>the</strong> vehicles of<br />

writing and graphic portrayal as a<br />

means of professional communication.<br />

The instruc<strong>to</strong>r serves as<br />

both coach and facilita<strong>to</strong>r. Projects<br />

are re<strong>view</strong>ed and evaluated by a<br />

jury from <strong>the</strong> architectural profession.<br />

ARC4123 PROFESSIONAL<br />

AWARENESS<br />

Prerequisite: Junior standing. An<br />

over<strong>view</strong> of professional practice<br />

in <strong>the</strong> contemporary setting, combined<br />

with exploring career alternatives,<br />

<strong>the</strong> steps required for<br />

entry in<strong>to</strong> a professional degree<br />

program, <strong>the</strong> internship years and<br />

licensure. Professional ethics and<br />

interdisciplinary professional relationships.<br />

Professionals will visit<br />

<strong>the</strong> classroom. Field trips.<br />

Reports, examinations and class<br />

participation measure <strong>the</strong> student’s<br />

understanding of course objectives.<br />

DESIGN STUDIO<br />

projects. Traditional or specialized<br />

reflective experience is nurtured<br />

by an increased cognizance of<br />

intrinsic architectural elements<br />

that help orchestrate <strong>the</strong> built<br />

environment. Individual instruc<strong>to</strong>rs<br />

may elect <strong>to</strong> focus inquiry on<br />

a variety of issues that can provide<br />

a corners<strong>to</strong>ne for design<br />

development that is an essential<br />

step in <strong>the</strong> realization of architecture.<br />

Issues include aes<strong>the</strong>tic, psychological,<br />

environmental, structural,<br />

and construction. In addition,<br />

architectural projects may<br />

encompass certain pivotal allied<br />

ARC4133 PASSIVE SOLAR<br />

DESIGN STRATEGIES<br />

Prerequisite: ARC3413 or with<br />

instruc<strong>to</strong>r’s permission. A comprehensive<br />

examination of <strong>the</strong> natural<br />

forces which impact <strong>the</strong> design of<br />

buildings. Environmental control<br />

systems for buildings with particular<br />

emphasis on passive solar<br />

design of heating, ventilating,<br />

daylighting, air conditioning systems,<br />

and o<strong>the</strong>r natural energy<br />

sources, <strong>the</strong>ir application and<br />

integration in <strong>the</strong> design of buildings.<br />

ARC4163 THE AMERICAN<br />

HOME<br />

Prerequisites: ARC3613,<br />

ARC3623. The American house is<br />

a product of nearly four centuries<br />

of architectural innovation and<br />

experimentation. It has played a<br />

major role in <strong>the</strong> development of<br />

<strong>the</strong> American cultural landscape<br />

and has also become a fundamental<br />

symbol of <strong>the</strong> American<br />

dream. An exploration of <strong>the</strong><br />

American home as an object signifying<br />

complex and often contradic<strong>to</strong>ry<br />

ideals of community and<br />

family, private and public life,<br />

originality and tradition, individualism<br />

and conformity, poverty and<br />

plenty. Course progresses more or<br />

less chronologically, beginning<br />

with <strong>the</strong> Colonial Era and concluding<br />

with manifestations of <strong>the</strong><br />

contemporary domestic landscape.<br />

ARC4173 FRANK LLOYD<br />

WRIGHT AND HIS TIMES<br />

Prerequisite: ARC3623. The<br />

architecture, planning, and writings<br />

of Frank Lloyd Wright and<br />

his influence on contemporary<br />

architecture. Includes antecedent<br />

contributions of H.H. Richardson,<br />

Louis Sullivan, and <strong>the</strong> Chicago<br />

School, <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> context<br />

of o<strong>the</strong>r contemporary architectural<br />

philosophies. A special focus is<br />

<strong>the</strong> University-owned Affleck<br />

House designed by Wright during<br />

his Usonian period. Lect. 3 hrs.<br />
