as a Problem for Contemporary History<br />
Andreas Rödder is Privatdozent in Modern History at the University<br />
of Stuttgart and, during the academic year 2001/2,<br />
�ellow at the Historisches Kolleg in Munich. His most recent<br />
book, entitled Die radikale Herausforderung: Die politische Kultur<br />
der englischen Konservativen 1846–1868, will be published in the<br />
GHIL’s <strong>German</strong> series in the summer. At the moment he is<br />
writing a textbook on the history of the �ederal Republic of<br />
<strong>German</strong>y between 1969 and 1990.<br />

Militarism Revisited—Conscription and Civil Society<br />
in <strong>German</strong>y<br />
Ute �revert holds a chair of Modern History at the University<br />
of Bielefeld and is a leading expert on nineteenth and twentieth-century<br />
history. Among her many publications are Men of<br />
Honour: A Social and Cultural History of the Duel (1995), and Die<br />
kasernierte Nation: Militärdienst und Zivilgesellschaft in Deutschland<br />
(2001).<br />

Excavating Modernity—Cities in Eastern Central Europe<br />
in the Inter-War Period<br />
Karl Schlögel is this year’s Visiting Professor at St Antony’s<br />
College, Oxford, and Professor of East European History at the<br />
European University Viadrina in �rankfurt (Oder). He has<br />
published extensively on many aspects of East European history,<br />
most recently, Berlin Ostbahnhof Europas—Russen und<br />
Deutsche in ihrem Jahrhundert (1998) and Promenade in Jalta und<br />
andere Städtebilder (2002).<br />
