The Biomedical Catalyst fund is a three year £180<br />

million programme <strong>in</strong>tended to boost the<br />

commercialisation of new medical treatments<br />

• The Biomedical Catalyst fund is an <strong>in</strong>tegrated translational fund<strong>in</strong>g programme jo<strong>in</strong>tly operated by the Technology<br />

Strategy Board (TSB) and the Medical Research Council (MRC).<br />

• The fund is <strong>in</strong>tended to provide seamless support for <strong>in</strong>itial research conducted <strong>in</strong> universities, through to the<br />

commercial development <strong>in</strong> small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). Three categories of fund<strong>in</strong>g are available:<br />

Key Features:<br />

A feasibility grant enables the exploration and<br />

evaluation of the commercial potential of an<br />

early-stage scientific idea through:<br />

Gather<strong>in</strong>g and review of evidence to <strong>in</strong>form<br />

decision mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Assessment of bus<strong>in</strong>ess opportunity<br />

Investigation of <strong>in</strong>tellectual property position<br />

Experimental studies to validate <strong>in</strong>itial concepts<br />

of exist<strong>in</strong>g pre-cl<strong>in</strong>ical work<br />

Scop<strong>in</strong>g for further development<br />

Bus<strong>in</strong>ess-led applications:<br />

Duration - up to 12 months<br />

Maximum grant - £150K<br />

Fund<strong>in</strong>g proportion - up to 75% of total eligible<br />

project costs<br />

Academic-led applications:<br />

Confidence <strong>in</strong> Concept Awards will be made<br />

available to researchers <strong>in</strong> major universities.<br />

An Early-stage grant is to evaluate the<br />

technical feasibility of an idea and<br />

establish proof of concept <strong>in</strong> a model<br />

system through:<br />

Experimental evaluation (lab-scale)<br />

Initial Demonstration <strong>in</strong> vitro and <strong>in</strong> vivo<br />

models (not human trials)<br />

Bus<strong>in</strong>ess-led applications:<br />

Duration - up to 3 years<br />

Maximum grant - £2.4M<br />

Fund<strong>in</strong>g proportion - up to 50% of total eligible<br />

project costs<br />

Academic-led applications:<br />

Duration - up to 3 years<br />

Maximum grant - £3M<br />

Fund<strong>in</strong>g proportion - awarded at RCUK FEC<br />

rules<br />

The Late-stage award is for the purpose of<br />

carry<strong>in</strong>g a well-developed concept and<br />

demonstrate its effectiveness <strong>in</strong> a relevant<br />

environment through:<br />

Initial human proof-of-concept studies<br />

Demonstration of safety and efficacy<br />

(<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g phase I and II cl<strong>in</strong>ical trials)<br />

Development of production mechanisms<br />

Prototyp<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Market test<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Intellectual Property Protection<br />

Bus<strong>in</strong>ess-led applications:<br />

Duration - up to three years<br />

Maximum grant - £2.4M<br />

Fund<strong>in</strong>g Proportion – up to 50% of total eligible<br />

project costs<br />

Academic-led applications:<br />

Duration – no formal limit<br />
