Role of important Government and Official Bodies <strong>in</strong> the<br />

• G-BA is the ma<strong>in</strong> decision-mak<strong>in</strong>g body with<strong>in</strong> the SHI under the level<br />

of the m<strong>in</strong>istry of health and the parliament - formulat<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

implement<strong>in</strong>g which services will be provided and under which<br />

conditions<br />

• G-BA has wide-rang<strong>in</strong>g regulatory powers<br />

– Assessment of new methods of medical diagnosis and treatment<br />

– Decision, if and <strong>what</strong> added benefit a new <strong>in</strong>novative drug has to offer and under <strong>what</strong> circumstances<br />

it may be prescribed for reimbursement by the statutory health <strong>in</strong>surance funds<br />

– Issues the directives that are necessary for safeguard<strong>in</strong>g medical service provision<br />

– Recommendations on requirements regard<strong>in</strong>g the content of disease management programs<br />

– Issues directives govern<strong>in</strong>g quality assurance <strong>in</strong> the ambulatory, <strong>in</strong>patient and <strong>in</strong>ter-sectoral spheres<br />

• S<strong>in</strong>ce 2004 national groups represent<strong>in</strong>g patients were given the right<br />

to file applications and to participate <strong>in</strong> the consultations of the G-BA<br />
