8.5 Agricultural Industry Workshop<br />
Representatives of the farming community and agricultural businesses in the <strong>Shire</strong><br />
participated in a workshop where a key focus of discussion was the future for agriculture in<br />
the <strong>Shire</strong>. Most expressed a desire to continue farming and more intensive industries were<br />
seen as one of the keys to remaining viable in the face of escalating land prices. However,<br />
a reliable supply of high quality water is required, especially for horticulture.<br />
8.6 Tourism Industry<br />
Representatives of the tourism industry were contacted to provide a perspective on issues<br />
around tourism in rural areas of the <strong>Shire</strong>. Tourism development, particularly in the<br />
hinterland, is considered to be constrained by the current planning controls, particularly the<br />
<strong>Rural</strong> Conservation Zone, and that alternative controls should be considered to encourage<br />
tourism in the rural areas of the <strong>Shire</strong>.<br />
8.7 Stakeholder Workshop Findings<br />
The following points summarises the conclusions of the Stakeholder Workshops:<br />
There was general agreement with the trends and drivers of rural land use change in the<br />
<strong>Shire</strong>;<br />
There was general agreement that the <strong>Rural</strong> <strong>Strategy</strong> and planning scheme controls had<br />
been effective in managing development in rural areas;<br />
A number of opportunities were identified for rural land:<br />
Tourism in rural areas;<br />
Boutique industries with value adding eg. cellar door/farmstay;<br />
Additional rural living;<br />
Recycled Water from the Black Rock Treatment Plant; and<br />
More intensive agricultural industries with access to good quality water and<br />
infrastructure.<br />
A number of threats to rural land were identified:<br />
Unplanned ad hoc rural living through purchase of farms for mainly residential<br />
purposes;<br />
Poor land management on rural lifestyle properties;<br />
Encroachment of rural living/urban development on agricultural businesses<br />
Impacts of development on the environment and landscapes<br />
High land prices will force agriculture – particularly broadacre industries out of the<br />
<strong>Shire</strong><br />
